The Jaffna International Trade Fair, celebrating its 15th year, officially opened on Friday, January 24, 2025, at Tilko Hotel. The event was inaugurated with speeches and followed by a tour of the exhibition halls, where the Honourable Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayakan, highlighted the significance of the fair in attracting investment to the region.
In his speech, the Governor emphasized the need for more investments to create job opportunities for the local population. He noted that the Northern Province is now experiencing an environment conducive to business, with increasing interest from foreign investors. He believes that attracting more investors can boost the economy and provide employment for local residents.
The Governor also reflected on the struggles the region faced during the 30-year conflict, including the destruction of industries and the loss of job opportunities. Before the war, government jobs were the primary source of employment. However, with the end of the conflict in 2009, efforts have been made to attract investors, though many challenges led to the departure of some. Recently, however, the Governor has seen a positive shift, with more investors and immigrants showing interest in settling in the area.
He further pointed out that trade, particularly in agricultural and fishing products, is beginning to recover between the North and South. The potential for exporting value-added agricultural and fishery products is also rising, which could create new jobs for locals.
In closing, the Governor urged the adoption of modern technologies and machinery to improve production and local goods. He called for a collective effort from all sectors to take full advantage of the current favourable environment to boost the province’s economy.
