Seven major roads belonging to the Provincial Road Development Department – Northern Province, which were severely affected by the recent irregular weather disaster in the Northern Province, have been temporarily repaired and reopened for public use, according to the Provincial Director of the Road Development Department – Northern Province, Engineer Mrs. Abirami Vithyaparan.
These rapid interventions were carried out in accordance with the directive issued by the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, during his inspection of the disaster-affected roads, instructing that the damaged roads be repaired without delay, at least temporarily, in order to quickly restore normal life for the people.
Accordingly, with the cooperation of government departments, the military, and local authorities, the following roads have been rehabilitated within a very short period:
1. Kandavalai Divisional Secretariat Division: 40 metres of the Pannai Road are being repaired.
2. Mullaitivu District: 25 metres of the Vattappalai – Keppapilavu – Puthukudiyiruppu Road have been repaired.
3. Vavuniya District: 50 metres of the PoovarasanKulam – Cheddikkulam Road have been repaired.
4. Manthai West:
* 5 metres of the Manthai–Parappukadanthaan Road have been repaired.
* 500 metres of the Kaddaaduvayal – Rāmayankulam Road have been repaired.
* 40 metres of the Magilankulam – Pallamadhu Road are being repaired.
Furthermore, the Katchilaimadhu Peraru Bridge in Mullaitivu District, which was suddenly damaged by the disaster yesterday, has been immediately repaired by the Road Development Department and reopened for public transportation.
The Provincial Director further stated that repair works are continuing on other damaged roads under the Provincial Road Development Department, and that the Department is committed to ensuring safe transportation for the public.
