Hon. Governor N. Vethanayahan instructs officials to expedite measures to bring the Mankulam Bus Stand into full operation

The Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, has instructed officials to expedite the necessary measures to bring the Mankulam Bus Stand—one of the key central hubs of the Mullaitivu District—into full operational use.

A special discussion to review the project proposal prepared by the Urban Development Authority regarding the development of the Mankulam Bus Stand was held on Friday evening, 23 January 2026, at the Governor’s Secretariat.

At present, the Mankulam Bus Stand and the surrounding commercial establishments are not being utilized in a proper manner. To address this situation and to activate the area to its full potential, the Urban Development Authority (UDA) has prepared a development plan, which was presented at this discussion.

During the discussion held with officials from the relevant departments, the following matters were examined:
1. Construction of access roads to the bus stand and connecting roads to the commercial establishments.
2. Centering Mankulam as a hub and, in the future, efficiently integrating and implementing local bus services within the Mullaitivu District.

As the road planned for the bus stand falls within the land boundary of the Mankulam Railway Station, it was decided to promptly obtain approval from the Department of Railways and commence the works.

The Governor also instructed that this project proposal be submitted to the Mullaitivu District Coordinating Committee meeting for approval.

Those who participated in the discussion included the Secretary to the Governor of the Northern Province, the Mullaitivu District Secretary, the Assistant Commissioner of Local Government – Mullaitivu District, the Divisional Secretary – Oddusuddan Division, the Hon. Chairman of the Puthukkudiyiruppu Pradeshiya Sabha, the Director and Deputy Director of the Urban Development Authority – Northern Province, an Engineer from the Department of Railways, the District Engineer of the Road Development Authority, the Director of the Northern Province Road Development Department, as well as representatives from the Sri Lanka Transport Board and private bus owners’ associations, among others.
