Planting trees and maintaining them has become a challenge in our province due to the destructive acts of certain individuals, stated Hon. Governor of Northern Province N. Vethanayahan with concern.
The Hon. Governor of the Northern Province inaugurated the Kilinochchi District Office of the Green Layer Organization, which has been continuously implementing tree-planting initiatives, on Saturday evening -18th October 2025.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor said that the Green Layer Organization is carrying out a significant development initiative within our province. The organization’s founder, Mr. Sasikumar, began this project as an individual effort and has successfully advanced it. Even before opening his office here, he had already initiated tree-planting programs in the districts of Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, and Mannar.
He carried out these initiatives with the assistance of Local Government Authorities. I have requested the chairmen of Local Authorities to plant even more trees, and I trust that they will carry this forward.
Although many sectors have previously launched tree-planting programs, only a few have succeeded in maintaining them. However, the Green Layer Organization not only plants trees but also gives special attention to their maintenance.
After trees are planted, some people cut them down, steal the protective cages placed around them, or even set them on fire. Such harmful acts have created major challenges. Despite these obstacles, I believe the Green Layer Organization will not only plant one million but one hundred million trees in the future, he said.
