A field inspection and discussion regarding the operation of the Mankulam Central Bus Stand was held today, Wednesday – September 24, 2025 under the chairmanship of the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.
The Governor and the team of officials visited the bus stand and examined how arrangements for bus arrivals and departures should be organized. Possible ways of implementing these arrangements were also considered.
Following this, a discussion was held at the auditorium of the Provincial Department of Irrigation in Mankulam.
Taking into account that Mankulam is a developing town and that an investment zone is expected to be established in the area in the near future, the Governor instructed that the draft development plan for Mankulam town from the Urban Development Authority be obtained.
The Governor also advised that steps be taken to expedite the inclusion of the Mankulam Central Bus Stand under the Clean Sri Lanka program, for which a letter has already been sent. Additionally, he instructed that drainage works be accelerated to prevent waterlogging at the bus stand during rainy seasons.
Discussions were also held with the Road Development Authority regarding the construction of access routes for buses to the central bus stand. Since railway lands are located in the area, it was decided to coordinate with the Railway Department to construct the road at a suitable location. As a first phase, it was agreed to widen and renovate the road connecting the bus stand with the A-9 highway to make the bus stand functional. It was further pointed out that the removal of shops located between the bus stand and the A-9 highway has already commenced.
It was also decided in the discussions that works which can be undertaken under the Clean Sri Lanka program will be carried out through it, while funds for other infrastructural needs will be provided from the Provincial Specific Development Grant (PSDG).
