A field day event for the success of the parachute method of paddy cultivation was held on 17th July 2025 at 9:00 a.m. in the paddy field of Mr. M. Thevarasa, a progressive farmer from Thandikulam village, located in the Thonikkal Agriculture Instructor Range in Vavuniya District. The event was organized by Deputy Director of Agriculture – Vavuniya Mrs. J.M. Muraleetharan, under the guidance of Mr. C. Kajaruban (Subject Matter Officer – Paddy) and under the leadership of Agriculture Instructor Mr. R.Tharsan.
The Vavuniya District Government Agent Mr. P.A. Sarathchandra was the chief guest. Vavuniya Deputy Director of Agriculture Additional District Government Agent Mr. Kamaladasan, District Statistician Mr. Jude Nesarajah, Kovilkulam Agricultural Development Officer Mrs. Kanchana, Subject Matter Officers, Agricultural Instructors, Technical Assistants, Representatives of Agricultural Organizations, Local Farmers and the Public were present at the event.
During the event, Mr. A. Thevarasa, a farmer who successfully practiced paddy cultivation using the parachute method, shared his experience with the participants. He explained that this method significantly reduces the cost of production compared to the traditional broadcasting method. Following his remarks, Mr. C. Kajaruban, Subject Matter Officer (Paddy), provided explanations regarding the parachute method to the farmers.
Vavuniya District celebrated a highly successful field day, marking a significant milestone in paddy cultivation. Progressive farmer from Thandikulam achieved an outstanding yield of 9 tons per hectare using the innovative parachute planting method. The high yielding variety Bg 374 was used for this cultivation, proving its adaptability and performance under modern techniques. This achievement highlights the effectiveness of the parachute method in increasing productivity while reducing inputs costs – offering a promising future for paddy farmers across the region.
Following this, Deputy Director of Agriculture, in her speech, commended the farmer who practiced the parachute method and advised other farmers to use this technology more in their paddy cultivation in the upcoming season. Following this, the District Statistician conducted crop estimating survey on paddy. During this, a result of 9 tons per hectare was obtained. The field day event was concluded successfully at around 11.30 am.
