The Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, stated that today’s younger generation tends to use the elderly for their needs and then abandon them in elders’ homes — a trend that has been on the rise. This is precisely why elder care homes are increasing in number, he said.
The Governor made these remarks at an event organized by the Kilinochchi Sivanagar Village Senior Citizens’ Association to honor elders, held this morning – on Thursday, 23rd October 2025, at the association’s hall.
Participating as the Chief Guest, the Governor said in his address: “Elders are our guides. They are the ones who have shown us the difference between right and wrong and guided us along the path of life. Their experiences are invaluable. Unfortunately, today’s younger generation not only fails to care for their elders but is also unwilling to even listen to their words of wisdom.
It was the elders of this region who built many of the villages in the Vanni area through their hard work and labor. But today, many have forgotten their contributions. I greatly appreciate the efforts taken today to honor and recognize them,” the Governor said.
The event was attended by Kilinochchi District Secretary Mr. S. Muralitharan, several government officials, elders, and preschool children.
