It has been decided to re-open the closed Economic Center in Vavuniya in a discussion held under the chairmanship of the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province and Co-Chairman of the Vavuniya District Coordination Committee, N. Vethanayahan, and the Hon. Deputy Minister of Cooperatives and Chairman of the Vavuniya District Coordination Committee, Upali Samarasinghe.
A special meeting was held at the Vavuniya District Secretariat on Saturday (28.06.2025). Parliamentarian Hon. M. Jagatheeswaran, Vavuniya District Secretary Sarath Chandra, Vavuniya Municipal Council Mayor S. Kandeepan, Vavuniya District Assistant Commissioner of Local Government T. Ratheeswaran and others participated in the meeting.
The main focus of the discussion was the opening of the Economic Centre, which was completed in 2018 but has yet to be made operational. As a first step, it was decided to grant trading permission to 37 vendors engaged in the wholesale vegetable trade in Vavuniya city. Accordingly, it was decided to operate the Economic Center as soon as possible.
Deputy Minister Upali Samarasinghe also pointed out to the Governor that action should be taken against those who illegally occupied tanks and acquired lands in Vavuniya. The discussion also addressed the issue of unauthorized shop complexes in Vavuniya city, and it was decided to take action for their removal.
