Based on a request submitted by the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, to His Excellency the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, a decision has been taken to close all licensed liquor stores in the Northern Province on Deepavali Day (20th October 2025). This decision has been officially communicated by the Department of Excise to the respective District Secretaries.
It is noteworthy that Hindu religious organizations had earlier requested the Governor to take necessary steps to close liquor outlets on Deepavali Day.
