It is encouraging that both local and overseas well-wishers are coming forward with keen interest to support the people of the Northern Province affected by the disaster. However, to ensure that this assistance properly reaches the intended beneficiaries and to prevent fraud, the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, has requested that donors contact the Disaster Management Committees established under the leadership of the respective District Secretaries.
An emergency discussion with UN agencies and representatives of international and local non-governmental organizations was held this morning – on Tuesday 02 December 2025, at the Governor’s Secretariat. The Governor made these remarks during the meeting.
The Governor further stated:
“Many parties are prepared to provide assistance. However, if everyone provides the same type of aid, it will not fulfil the overall needs of the people. Needs must be identified through the District Secretariats, and assistance should be distributed accordingly.
Complaints have been received that some intermediaries or groups collect funds abroad claiming to provide aid, but then give only minimal assistance to beneficiaries—merely for the sake of taking photographs. To prevent such fraud, it is best for donors to obtain the official needs list from the District Secretariat and provide assistance based on that.
The government is providing essential funds and relief. Therefore, it would be appropriate for NGOs and donors to provide additional support beyond what the government offers, addressing other necessary needs of the people.
As people are now beginning to return home from welfare centres, their needs are changing. It is important to identify and support livelihood and resettlement needs.
The Governor also pointed out that the diaspora continues to contribute generously to the government-established relief fund.”
Representatives from UN agencies and non-governmental organizations participated in this discussion and assured that they will carry out their relief activities in coordination with the District Secretariats.
