Children must be protected from the use of deadly drugs. A network is being created targeting children, and we must dismantle it to provide them with a safe environment. Investing in children is the foundation for a prosperous future nation. These remarks were made by the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.
An event to commemorate International Children’s Day, organized by the Northern Province Department of Probation and Child Care Services, was held on Saturday evening – 18th October 2025, at the Bharathi Star Hall in Kilinochchi.
The chief guests were the Hon. Minister of Women and Child Affairs, Mrs. Saroja Savithri Paulraj, and the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan. The guests were warmly welcomed by the children, and they also visited an exhibition of creative works by children from children’s homes. Certificates and cheques were awarded to winners of competitions held among children from children’s homes, those who excelled in the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examinations, and those selected for university.
Speaking at the event, the Governor emphasized that children should not be subjected to physical or psychological punishment. By nurturing children with love, we can create a better nation. We must not engage in anything harmful to children.
The children from the children’s homes presented outstanding performances today, showcasing their talents for all to see. We must act in a way that makes them feel they are growing up in their own homes.
In the past, many children lost their parents due to various reasons. Even today, children are left orphaned due to accidents. No child should be left without support. We cannot allow their future to be compromised. The provincial department must monitor children’s homes, embrace all children, and mold them into good citizens needed for this country, the Governor stated.
The event, chaired by Mrs. Sujeeva Sivathas, Commissioner of the Department of Probation and Child Care Services – Northern Province, was attended by the District Secretaries of Kilinochchi and Mannar, as well as children from all children’s homes in the Northern Province.
