The inaugural meeting of the Provincial Level Committee—established under the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ project to clean and renovate 50 bus stands nationwide—was held today, Monday (18.08.2025), at the Governor’s Secretariat. The meeting was chaired by the Honorable Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.
Under this scheme, nine bus stands in the Northern Province have been selected: Jaffna, Nelliyadi, Palai, Mullaitivu, Pudukkudiyuruppu, Mannar, Nanattan, Vavuniya, and Vengalachettikulam.
Divisional-level committees are to be established in the Divisional Secretariat divisions where these bus stands are located. The respective Divisional Secretaries will serve as the chairpersons of these committees.
During today’s discussion, the Governor emphasized that all aspects of improvement and expansion—including basic facilities—at the selected bus stands must be thoroughly assessed, with detailed reports to be prepared. These reports should first be reviewed by the respective regional-level committees and subsequently submitted to the Provincial Level Committee for further consideration.
Although bus stands in the main cities of all districts in the Northern Province have been selected, it was decided during the meeting to request the Ministry of Transport to include the Kilinochchi City Bus Stand in the project, as it was not initially selected for the Kilinochchi District.
Similarly, as the Mullaitivu City Bus Station in the Mullaitivu District is to be developed using funds allocated by the Urban Development Authority, it was decided at today’s meeting to consider including the Mankulam Bus Station in the project instead, and to submit a formal request to that effect.
