The Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, stated that a prioritized list of roads in Manthai East should be prepared for reconstruction and that the work can be carried out gradually each year based on the available funds.
A meeting between all members of the Manthai East Pradeshiya Sabha, led by its Chairman, Mrs. Rasaiya Nalini, and the Governor of the Northern Province was held at the Governor’s Secretariat on Friday morning – 17th October 2025.
During the meeting, the Chairman of the Council, Mrs. R. Nalini, stated that following the inspection visit of the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, the Kuththuppaalam Bridge was handed over to the Provincial Council for reconstruction and that work is currently underway. She also emphasized the need for the bridge to be permanently reconstructed. In response, the Governor confirmed that a request for this has already been submitted and necessary action has been initiated.
The Chairman and members informed the Governor that the income of the Manthai East Pradeshiya Sabha is very low, making it difficult to pay the salaries of council employees. They requested support to increase revenue and to ensure that at least one road in the villages is reconstructed in the meantime. They further stated that although funds had been allocated by the Provincial Council, they were unable to install street lights because the Ceylon Electricity Board had not granted permission. They emphasized the need for street lights at major junctions, as residents are facing safety issues due to elephant movements. In response, the Governor assured them that he would discuss the matter with the Electricity Board.
Furthermore, administrative needs and other requirements of the Council were also discussed with the Governor.
The Secretary to the Governor, S. Sathiyaseelan, was also present at the discussion.
