A discussion to implement a coordinated program to control stray dogs was held at the Governor’s Secretariat yesterday, Thursday (26.06.2025) under the chairmanship of the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.
Pointing out that the problems caused by stray dogs have increased in the Northern Province, especially in the Jaffna, Mannar and Mullaitivu districts, and that despite the steps taken by various departments in the past to control them, there has not been sufficient progress, the Governor emphasized the need for a coordinated program in this regard.
It was decided during today’s discussion that Department of Local Government, Animal Production and Health, and Department of Health will jointly develop a project to implement this program, with the first phase to be launched in the Jaffna district.
The Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, the Senior Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Health, the Senior Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, the Director of Health Services, the Director of the Northern Provincial Department of Animal Production and Health, and the Assistant Commissioner of Local Government of Jaffna District participated in this discussion.
