“Learning Sinhala and English in addition to our mother tongue will always be beneficial to us.” – Hon. Governor

By learning another language, we can not only make our service more efficient but also reduce communication gaps, said the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.

The graduation ceremony of the Sinhala Diploma Course for Provincial Government Officers, conducted by the National Institute of Language Education and Training in collaboration with the Northern Provincial Council, was held this morning – on Monday, 13 October 2025, at the auditorium of the Chief Secretary’s Secretariat of the Northern Province.

Speaking at the event, the Governor stated that the second batch of the Diploma Course is completing their studies today, and courses for the third batch will commence soon.

Language is essential for everything. Learning Sinhala and English, in addition to our mother tongue Tamil, will always be advantageous to us. Knowing other languages helps us perform our duties more effectively.

When Hindi was introduced in Jaffna, some people expressed opposition. But there is nothing wrong in learning another language. Knowing another language helps us to develop ourselves.

If we wish to communicate our culture, traditions, and issues to others, it is necessary to know their language. It makes communication easier, said the Governor.

At this event, certificates were awarded to 35 officers who successfully completed the Diploma Course.

Among those who participated were Mrs. Thanuja Murugesan, Chief Secretary of the Northern Province; Mr. Saminda Maleham, Director General of the National Institute of Language Education and Training; Dr. S. Kannathasan, Head of the Department of Translation Studies, University of Jaffna; Mr. S. Pranavanathan, Deputy Chief Secretary – Personnel and Training, Northern Province; Mrs. Ezhilarasi Anton yoganayagam, Deputy Chief Secretary – Administration, Northern Province; and Mr. A.
