Casino owner Al Copeland opened the first Tropicana in 1981 in the Florida Keys.

You read that correctly—from $35 million to $141 million in a down economy. Nice score, I’d say.
MGM grew its resort holdings from there but ran into trouble when its Russian partners defaulted on funding for the CityCenter project in Vegas.
Hard Rock International eventually bought the Trop for $37 million in 2017 and flipped it to Hard Rock for $500 million in 2019.
