In order to increase the income of farmers engaged in potato cultivation in the Northern Province as well as in the whole country, Jaffna District Parliamentarian Anganjan Ramanathan requested the Governor Dr. Suren Raghavan to raise the import duty for potatoes during the yield.
The Governor brought this issue to the attention of the President Maithiripala Sirisena. Subsequently, under the direction of the President, Agriculture Minister P.Harison took action to increase the import tax for the potatoes from 20 rupees to 50 rupees with effect from 01st January 2019.
