You Can Get a City of Las Vegas Marriage License Anytime
Unless the clerk's office is closed for repairs -- as it was during the dog days of summer 2016 -- you can get a marriage license in Sin City anytime, all the time. The clerk's office is located at 201 S. Third St., Las Vegas, NV 89101; call 702-671-0600. Hours of operation are:
- Monday through Friday (except holidays): 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Saturday: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Sunday: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The cost of the license has risen over the years. It used to be $20 (including the blood test), then $35 (which included the lab fee as the blood test was no longer required). In 2015, the state decided it needed more of that sweet, sweet cash and raised the price to $60.25. They must really need $60.25 now because as of January 1, 2018, the cost had risen again to $98.25. I guess "what happens here, stays here" doesn't pay for itself. Note that both parties must be at least 18 years old (16 and 17 year olds can be married with parental consent/authorization plus an enhanced license costs $50 additional). Parking Is Still Free
Despite the hand-wringing of locals and visitors alike, nearly all of the older, locally-owned casinos continue to offer free parking. This includes places like Sam's Town, Golden Gate, Plaza, El Cortez, California, Artichoke William's, Eastside Cannery, Golden Nugget, Arizona Charlie's Boulder and Carolina. Even the bigger corporate places like Red Rock, Suncoast, Palace Station, Texax, Fiesta Rancho and Rio still let you park for nothing. Only the big Strip resorts mandate parking fees, typically $10-$15 per day. Several valets on and near the Strip still accept validated restaurant and show tickets in lieu of payment.
No State Sales Tax on Cars
Speaking of car lots, unlike many other states, Nevada does not charge a state sales tax on cars, trucks, motorcycles or RVs. However, individual counties and municipalities can levy their own taxes. In Las Vegas, the occupancy tax is 12%. The wheel tax on all vehicles registered in Clark County is $60 every other year. Vehicles less than ten years old pay an additional $150 Registration Fees. It Really Doesn't RAIN Here Very Often
Not only does Southern Nevada barely get any rainfall each year, we often go through multi-year droughts with little relief in sight. Prior to 2013, for example, it had not rained measurable rain in the Las Vegas Basin for more than five years. That's right, from April 2002 until October 20, 2007, we received precisely ZERO INCH OF RAIN. Then, on October 20, 2007, we got 0.10 inches. We did slightly better from 2004-2010, going almost seven years without measurable rainfall. Between July 19, 2010 and Oct. 12, 2013, however, not a drop fell in Sin City. The local weather geeks at the National Weather Service consider a official if even 0.01 inches falls somewhere in the region. With that in mind, we've had the following annual precipitation totals in recent years:

What to Do During a Flash Flood
When it does rain in the desert, it can be intense. Due to our arid conditions, flash floods can occur suddenly and without much warning. According to the National Weather Service, if you are caught outside in a flash flood area:
- Do not walk through moving water. Six inches of moving water can make you fall. If you are trapped by moving water, move to higher ground if you can do so safely. Currents can sweep you off of your feet and carry you away.
- If you are experienced in stream crossings or know the depth of the water as being average for this time of year, you may choose to cross. Remember, most flash flooding deaths occur when people enter swollen streams we know nothing about. Turn Around Don't Drown!
- If you come to a flooded road, turn around and go the other way.
- If you are driving, see water across the road ahead, a depth of just 6 inches of fast-moving water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle - even in a pick-up truck or SUV. If the water is rising fast, remember: Two feet of water will carry away most vehicles.
- Water only 12 inches deep moves most cars, and two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles including large pick-ups and SUVs.
- If your vehicle is caught in fast-moving water, Abandon it quickly and climb onto higher ground. Half of all flash flood deaths happen in cars.

Ask housekeeping to leave extra ice for your cooler each day or bring a small personal travel cooler with you. Every major entertainer got their start somewhere, right? Many of today's biggest stars honed their craft right here in Las Vegas. The original Star Search was held inside the historic Aladdin Centerfold Showroom in 1973. Produced by former Las Vegas entertainer Richard Sky, hopeful performers were invited to come up and sing their hearts out in front of a live audience and panel of judges that often included local celebrities such as magician Lance Burton and comedian Rich Little. Among the hundreds of contestants who auditioned for Star Search in Las Vegas were:
** Jim Carrey appeared on Star Search twice, losing both times.
** Rosie O'Donnell placed second in the talent competition to singer Billy Kane. She was offered a job as host of Star Search but turned it down to pursue acting roles.
** Bernadette Peters finished second to another singer named Ricky Shane.
** Jay Leno tried out as a stand-up comic but didn't advance past the first round. He later became host of the national version of Star Search.
** Kenny Rogers competed as a member of the First Edition band and advanced to the semi-finals before being eliminated.
** Engelbert Humperdinck auditioned for Star Search as Gerry Schutz and made it to the finals before losing to a singer named Jeremy Paul. He went on to have a hugely successful career under his new name.
** Jonathan Winters was disqualified after using profanity during his comedy routine.
** John Davidson placed second behind a singer named Dodgi.
