As we edge ever closer to the start of the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, more and more WSOP players will be reflecting on where they earned their gold rings this time last year.

While the majority of the 88 WSOP events will take place at the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino as usual, the WSOP New York festival will give hundreds of card players from the Big Apple the chance to earn a coveted ring much closer to home.

WSOP New York Online Qualifiers

The online qualifier route has proven popular with US poker players since it was introduced last year.

And with five gold rings up for grabs at the Hilton Midtown hotel between October 5-9, the will no doubt prove popular once again.

How to Qualify for NYC WSOP Ring Event

There are two ways you can qualify for the WSOP ring event in New York City. You can either win your way into one of the three live tournament finals or you can clinch your seat via one of the numerous online finals.

For those who choose the former, the three highest stacked players at the end of Level 14 (roughly 5.5 hours) will receive a free $1,070 entry to each respective WSOP International Ring Event, which will take place at the WSOP in Las Vegas from May 31 to June 2, 2018. Any seats that go unused will be awarded to players who finished rankings fourth through 10th in the final three tournaments.

Meanwhile, the WSOP New York satellites will give players plenty of opportunities to pick up a seat for the $1,000 WSOPring event without having to risk too much of their own bankroll.

As well as a number of , players will be able to pick from a series of much cheaper feeder tournaments, with multi-table and sit-and-go formats available.

What Last Year's NYC WSOP Winner Says

Last year’s inaugural WSOP New York main event was won by New Yorker David Miscik, who bagged the top prize of $226,524 after seeing off a field of 444 entrants.

Miscik, a former Wall Street trader, said at the time he would use his winnings to set up a charity. However, when peppered with questions about which one he was going to donate to, he laughed off the queries and said he had yet to make a decision.

Elsewhere, the success of the WSOP New York event helped Caesars Entertainment record its best ever quarterly results in New York and New Jersey, while the WSOP itself reported record numbers online too.

Under his old alias, he claimed another two WSOP titles in 2000 and 2001. However, following a name change, Drake is now able to enjoy his latest triumph under his own alias. Sam Soverel followed up his recent WSOP Africa triumph by claiming victory in the recent partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Grand Prix Montreal. Soverel overcame a field of 743 to scoop the top prize of $128,800. Elsewhere, Kristen Bicknell came first in the partypoker LIVE MILLIONS women’s event, whilst Scott Wellen balanced work and play to finish third for $97,060.

Jon Finkel Banned From GP Atlanta for Cheating

Hall of Fame Magic: The Gathering player Jonathan “Jon Finkel” T.I. was recently banned from a Grand Prix tournament in Atlanta after being accused of cheating.

Finkel, who was inducted into the Magic: The Gathering Hall of Fame in 2015, was competing in the booster draft portion of the event when officials alleged he was cheating. An official rules enforcement team determined Finkel had broken multiple aspects of the game’s comprehensive rulebook and disqualified him. He was subsequently banned from future Hasbro-run tournaments. Finkel denied the allegations but his pleas fell on deaf ears.
