That includes both internet poker rooms and social poker apps that let you play with friends, family or anyone in the state of New Jersey using Facebook as a sign-in. If software is high on your list of important factors when choosing an online poker room, 888poker NJ should be at the top of your list. It simply has the best software in New Jersey with features like table jackpot side games and a snappy interface. You can also resize the poker client to your liking, which isn't possible at WSOP.com NJ, for example. 888poker also runs the iPoker network, which it licenses to several other US states and countries around the world. We'll let you know about the downsides momentarily but if you want the best overall experience, 888poker NJ is the place to play. Check out our full review below:

Pros:

  • Unique Software Features

  • iPoker Network Satellites

  • 40 Tournaments/Week + $100K Sundays

  • Low Rake: 5-6% (5.5% average in NJ)

Best NJ Online Casinos (Updated for 2023) - Top New Jersey Casino Sites

Reviewers: Steve Beaumont, Daniel Smyth

What we love most about 888poker NJ are the additional features you won't find elsewhere. Such as table side poker games where you can play a game like Pyramid Poker and win up to 300x your bet while in the middle of a tournament or cash game. Other notable features include early access tournaments (for a fee) and four color deck for spotting specific hand ranges. Most poker clients in New Jersey do not allow you to customize the size and 888poker does to some degree. The downside of all these features is that 888poker attracts so much fishy traffic from around the world that it slows the software down sometimes. It's also one of the only major rooms without eight-game and that's a dealbreaker for many serious grinders.

August 2023 Promotion: Use PokerListings FLASH50 bonus code to get $50 FLASH bonus (cleared in $5 increments every time you contribute $50 to the rake). You'll also receive 100% up to $500 Deposit Bonus and the new Bruschetta Bonus worth up to $500. 888poker NJ also has a great lineup of tournaments starting with $100 Sundowners and working up to a $100,000 Sunday Main Event with multiple entries allowed. There's also $10 satellite system leading to the main event and plenty of deeperush MTTs throughout the week.

3. partypoker NJ (Best PLO Traffic)

Available On: Desktop, Android, iPhone

Bonus/s: $50 FLASH / PokerListings + 100% up to $600 Deposit Match • Spin the Wheel and Win up to $1,200 on deposits over $20 • $25,000 PT4Life Leaderboard • $30k Grinder Package Giveaway • $1M in Annual OSCAR’S Promotions

Partypoker NJ is known for having the most traffic in PLO games outside the WSOP.com network. That's why it appeals to a certain crowd and depending on who you ask, that could be a good or bad thing. Pot limit Omaha is available in both cash games and tournaments with the latter getting more attention due to smaller fields. If that sounds like you, head to Partypoker NJ for our FLASH/PL promotions and a ton of added PLO tourney guarantees throughout the year. Otherwise there's better options, which we've explained further below.

Pros:

  • Best PLO Traffic in NJ

  • Exclusive PokerListings Offers

  • Power Play Option

  • Active Promotions w/Patrik Antonius and Katie Lindsay

  • Low Rake: 5-6% (5.5% average in NJ)

  • Software not as polished as 888poker NJ

  • Only secondary choice for RNG poker in NJ

Reviewers: Nathan Hunt, Steve Beaumont

For those who don't play PLO, you may have taken one look at Partypoker NJ and noticed that eight-game isn't offered. That's very unfortunate because not only is it a legitimate skill game, but it's also a breath of fresh air when you're not playing hands like AK suited every hand. Hopefully Partypoker will add it soon but until then, eight-game players have to choose WSOP.com NJ or 888poker NJ. Another beef some players have about Partypoker NJ is the software. While certainly serviceable, it doesn't compare to 888poker NJ in terms of features and speed.

August 2023 Promotion: Sign up via PokerListings and use FLASH/PL link or code to get $50 (FLASH) bonus + 100% up to $600 Deposit Match bonus. You'll also spin the wheel and win up to $1,200 extra on deposits over $20. Partypoker NJ always has a lot going on with Patrik Antonius and Katie Lindsay as faces of brand. Expect at least one big series per month with millions of points awarded in OSCAR'S program.

4. BetMGM Poker NJ (Best HUD Software)

Available On: Desktop, Android, iPhone

Bonuses: $75 FLASH / PokerListings + Play Your First Game Free up to $750 Deposit Match • VIP Entry to $100K Nightlife Series Final • Flip N Go Tournament Series • MLB All-Star Challenge

18+ | Play Responsibly | T&C Apply

BetMGM Poker NJ used to run on the partypoker US network but switched to the popular and reliable software in 2023. The result is bigger traffic for BetMGM Poker NJ and therefore better games for local players. It's still not WSOP.com NJ or even 888poker NJ, but BetMGM Poker NJ is creeping up third place. The software is also very good these days with support for third-party tracking and stats software. This is a big plus for regulated US online poker because it levels the playing field for non pro's.

Pros:

  • Great All-Around Poker Client

  • Exclusive PokerListings Offers

  • Exclusive VIP Pass to Borgata Poker Open Main Event

  • Low Rake: 5-6% (5.5% average in NJ)

  • Casino Tab within Poker Client

  • Not as much traffic as above

  • No eight-game

Downsides aside, we're really happy to see another solid option for New Jersey poker players. Especially one with good promotions and fast payments processing. One area where BetMGM Poker NJ shines is its VIP treatment for loyal players. Everyone gets entry to a weekly $100k nightlife series, for example, but higher stakes players can work their way up to a seats in the $1,500 Borgata Poker Open Main Event. You'll also notice lots of MGM branded live poker satellites and tournaments leading up to the WSOP and other major events.

July Promotion: Get $75 (FLASH) bonus + Play Your First Game Free up to $750 Deposit Match with our PokerListings link or code. BetMGM Poker NJ has something for everyone right now with MLB All-Star Challenges, Flip N Go tournaments and nightly guaranteed tournaments starting at $10. Daily step satellites start at $2 and give you a shot at the $100,000 The Nightlife Series Main Event on August 26.

5. PokerStars NJ (Coming Soon)

We aren't counting PokerStars New Jersey yet because it's currently paused, but that could change any day now. was approved to relaunch its online poker and NJ sports betting business in June 2023 and the app is already live in neighboring Pennsylvania and Michigan.

This will be a big deal for the New Jersey online poker landscape because PokerStars is the best operator in the world and could potentially take some volume away from WSOP.com NJ. We don't expect that to happen overnight because WSOP.com shares liquidity with Nevada and Delaware now, but PokerStars will have a strong product with mixed games and a proven reputation. We anticipate a surge in traffic after the initial wave of excitement dies down. Please check back regularly for updates.

What you can do in the meantime is pre-register at PokerStars MI using one of links or reviews below. That will put you in the queue for the grand opening VIP package and instant prizes when the site goes live. We don't know exactly what's in the PokerStars NJ welcome package, but the one in Michigan includes a $100 bonus, 3 x $20 Zoom tickets, 3 x Starburst casino packages and more. Stay tuned!

New Jersey Online Poker Laws Explained

Before diving any deeper into this guide, we think it’s important to discuss New Jersey’s online poker laws and how they impact you. It's also important to note that we only ever recommend fully licensed and legal New Jersey poker websites in this guide. So long as you stick to those, you shouldn’t run into any issues during the signing up or playing process.

The state of New Jersey made online poker and gaming legal and available across the state in 2013. Governor Chris Christie actually vetoed the bill at first, citing it went against the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). State lawmakers overrode that decision in 2013, however, thus making it legal for casinos within the state to offer poker games and other products online. You can read the official legislation – NJ Assembly Bill 616 – on the New Jersey General Assembly site.

This move saw a number of big-name gambling companies launch online sites for users located inside New Jersey’s borders. And more have followed suit in subsequent years. Borgata was among the first to launch an online poker platform in Association with the popular MOTRPACE Casinos. This meant people could play real money poker games and use various other online casino services in New Jersey.

Where Can You Play?

You can play legal online poker in any geographic location inside the state of New Jersey. WSOP has a special agreement to extend its online monopoly beyond the borders of Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware to nearby states like Pennsylvania and jut barely jmist New York. However, you must be a physical resident of New Jersey (or very close to the border). That means you need an IP address associated with a physical address in New Jersey or very close to the border.

Who Can Play Online Poker in NJ?

Anyone 21 years or older who is physically present inside New Jersey can create an account and play real-money games on one of these regulated websites. You’ll need to provide your Social Security Number (SSN) for verification purposes when setting up your account. If you don’t have an SSN, you can submit other government-issued identification instead.

Can I Win Real Money?

Yes, you can absolutely win real money while playing online poker in New Jersey. In fact, it’s one of the main reasons why this activity is legal. State legislators were keen to generate more tax revenue, which is why casinos are permitted to offer real-money online poker games and share the profits.

More specifically, online poker sites give away real money because they come from three different sources:

  1. Rake. Each hand of online poker takes a small cut known as “rake”. This amount varies from site to site and game to game, but it can be as much as 5-10% of the pot in some cash games and tournaments.
  2. Revenue Share. Online poker sites also make money by taking a percentage of all player deposits. The standard rate here is 1-5%, although some sites waive these fees for short periods.
  3. Bonuses. Last but not least, online poker sites entice customers with bonuses such as deposit matches, meaningwhile earn money by meeting rollover requirements.

All the money accrued via these three avenues is considered profit, which gets paid to the state in taxes.

How Do I Collect My Winnings?

Once you’ve built up a bankroll on an online poker website in New Jersey, you’ll probably want to withdraw your funds at some point. Fortunately it’s incredibly simple to collect your winnings and there are several payment methods to choose from.

First you’ll need to verify your account by providing the online poker site with relevant documentation such as a photo of your ID, bank cards, and proof of address. Once this process has been completed and your identity verified, you can cash out using any of these methods:

  • Direct bank transfer (most reliable)
  • Paper check via mail
  • Online payment wallet (e.g. Skrill and Neteller)
  • Cash at the casino desk (if the online poker site is linked to a land based venue)

Withdrawal times can vary depending on the method chosen, although it generally takes 24-48 hours for a site to process a request. From there, it should take two to ten days for the funds to reach your preferred destination.

When cashing out, you may be asked to meet a playthrough requirement. For example, the site may request that you wager the same value as your withdrawal before you’re allowed to cash out again. Needless to say, no playthrough is required when using eWallets such as Skrill or Neteller.

Finally, you’ll need to pay taxes on your winnings - both federal tax and New Jersey state income tax. The exact rates depend on your total income, but all players are liable to pay taxes on their gross gambling revenue.

How to Play NJ Online Poker from NY

As mentioned above, the borders between New York and New Jersey are pretty well traveled and many people commute back and forward on a daily basis. It would be nice to be able to play WSOP NJ poker from NY, but that isn't currently possible unless you're in one of the bordertowns with a clear line of sight to the New Jersey side.

Instead, your only option for legal online poker in New York is through commercial operators such as Caesars Online NY, BetRivers or Resorts World Catskills. Those sites aren't nearly as good as WSOP.com NJ or its competitors, however, which makes the commute or finding a place near the border to play worth it for many.

History of Online Poker in New Jersey

New Jersey became one of the first states to legalize and regulate online poker when former governor Chris Christie signed Bill S19 into law in February 2013. The bill was initially met with enthusiasm in the poker community because it created three state compact that could potentially share liquidity between New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware. That hasn't happened yet, but it is a possibility down the road.

Christie actually vetoed the original bill (twice), but state lawmakers voted to override him both times. At Christie's behest, the final bill included a number of amendments such as a $200,00 application fee for online gaming platforms and a prohibition on advertising or marketing games through television, radio, newspapers, magazines and the Internet.

Poker operators were essentially limited to promoting their wares through signage at their brick and mortar partners. Fortunately, that ban was lifted in May 2018.

Amazing No Deposit Bonus Slot Tips You Need to Know

State regulators held their first licensing hearing on April 30, 2013 and ultimately gave Ultimate Gaming and the Borgata Poker Network (BPN) approval to become the state’s first legal online poker providers. Ultimate Gaming became the first operator to offer real money poker games on May 28, 2013 and BPN followed suit on June 27, 2013.

Ultimate Gaming ended up exiting the market in November 2014 and pulled its poker and casino games offline. That left BPN (later rebranded as WSOP/888) as the sole operator in New Jersey - a situation that lasted until PokerStars entered the picture in March 2023.

How to Sign Up and Start Playing

Now that you've decided which NJ poker site you want to play on, it’s time to start setting up an account. We’ll be demonstrating the sign up process using WSOP.com NJ, but the basic principles apply to all operators in the state.

1. Go to WSOP.com NJ

First things first, go ahead and click on one of our secure links to WSOP.com NJ. Alternatively, you can search for “WSOP New Jersey” on your web browser. Either way, you need to arrive at the homepage before creating an account.

2. Click on “Sign Up” or “Log In”

Once you’re at the WSOP New Jersey site, scroll to the upper right-hand corner and click on the person icon. Two options will appear - “Log In” and “Sign Up.” If you have an account, log in with your credentials. But if you’re new to this site, click on “Sign Up.”

3. Enter Personal Details

A series of boxes will appear, asking for personal details such as name, date of birth, email address, and last four digits of your Social Security Number (SSN). If you don’t have an SSN, you can contact customer support for further instructions.

Click “Next” once all those boxes have been filled in.

4. Provide Remaining Info and Accept Terms

Page two of the registration form asks for your address, phone number, and the last four digits of any bank cards you plan to use on this site. Again, fill in those boxes and click “next.”

After that, you’ll be asked to accept all the terms and conditions laid out by this site. Scroll down to read through those T&Cs and tick the box once you’re satisfied. Finally, click “Create Account” at the bottom.

5. Verify Your Account

That should create your basic account, but you’ll need to verify your details and documents before playing real-money games. To do that, log back into your account and hit the “Verify Identity” option in the cashier section.

You will then be prompted to send in copies of various forms of ID. Specifically, you need to provide the following:

  • A photo of your government-issued photo (such as a passport or driver’s license).
  • A copy of your latest utility bill or bank statement (something that shows your name and current address).
  • If you don’t have a SSN, you will need to provide alternative forms of ID.
2023's Best Michigan Casinos - Updated List w/ Map

Send those documents off to be checked and you should receive confirmation within 24 to 48 hours. If everything is in order, you’ll be free to make a deposit and play real-money poker games at WSOP New Jersey.

Types of Real-Money Games

If you’ve played poker before, you’ll feel right at home on these regulated New Jersey sites. That’s because all the top operators - including WSOP.com NJ and 888poker - use tried-and-tested software that adheres to international standards.

As a result, you can enjoy cash games and tournaments via your desktop computer or mobile device. Furthermore, you can use a range of chips and currency settings, and sit at tables featuring different limits, formats, and numbers of players.

Cash Games

also refers to these games as “ring games”, and at the time of writing, you can play No Limit Hold’em and PLO games with two to nine players at each table.

Limited stakes of €0.01/€0.02 through to €1/€2 exist for both NLHE and PLO ring games, along with some higher stakes. As of July 2023, the highest NLHE stakes are €2/€4, though there are higher PLO stakes of €2/€4 / €6/€12.

All cash games are six-maximum apart from one exception - the €100NLHE “Ultra” table, which seats up to nine players. When we say these tables are “fast,” we mean it. All games feature “Turbo” settings as standard, meaning the clock only starts when a player acts (rather than a set amount of time).

Sit & Go Tournaments

There’s a selection of three and nine-handed sit-and-go tournaments covering a wide range of buy-ins. Games are available for Full Ring too, though 888poker doesn’t offer full ring SNGs at the moment.

In total, there are more than 40 three-handed sit-and-go games ranging from €0.01 (+€0.10) through to €200 (+€20). Similarly, there are more than 35 nine-handed games starting at €0.01 (+€0.10) and rising to €200 (+€20).

Four Winds Casino Online Alternatives for When You’re Traveling

If you like playing Lottery-style sit-and-gos (snGs with random paying positions), you'll find more than 30 games ranging from €0.08 (+€0.10) through to €100 (+€50). These Lottery snGs are available in both three-handed and nine-handed formats, and you can play Texas Hold’em or Omaha at Limited stakes.

Multi-Table Tournaments

Multi-table tournaments (MTTs) are available on a daily and occasional basis. We say “occasional” because some events are one-offs to mark special occasions. For example, there may be an anniversary event to celebrate the launch of a certain poker client in New Jersey.

Satellites are available for some of the higher priced events, and these can be a great way of getting involved for less. Indeed, you can often win seats to $100 freerolls, $109 tournaments, $200 tournaments, and events costing $333, $500, and $1,000. Occasional satellites give you the chance to win $888-R ($8,888) tickets or $10,300-worthy MTT tickets.

The largest regular events are the $50,000 (aka $50k) Sundowner (weekly) and $100,000 (aka $100k) Deepstack (monthly). Buy-in for the $50k is $333, while the price of entry for the $100k is $500. Both tournaments attract thousands of registrations, so it’s not unusual to see overlay.

Other notable MTTs at include the $10,300-style event (buy-in is $333), WSOP Circuit Ring events, and the occasional WSOP Global Casino Championship (GCC) event. Indeed, playing online poker in New Jersey gives you a chance to win a WSOP of Aria trophy without leaving the state.

Freerolls

Freerolls are a good way of building your bankroll without risking your own cash. Nowadays, there aren’t many daily or weekly freerolls available on 888poker and WSOP NJ. However, you can still take part in the odd freeroll - particularly if you’re a new customer or low stake player.

For example, there’s a $100 freeroll for new customers (providing you deposit at least $10). Moreover, there are several freerolls that cost nothing to enter and award real cash prizes. These range from £5 freerolls through to £300 freerolls.

Making a Real Money Deposit

If you want to play real-money poker games and casino titles in New Jersey, you’ll need to make a deposit. The good news is the process is extremely safe, secure, and straightforward. What’s more, there are a variety of methods you can use to fund your account.

If your initial deposit is successful, you’ll need to verify your identity and prove you’re based in New Jersey (or very close to the border). This verification process typically involves sending in copies of various documents. Once your identity has been confirmed, you should be able to make deposits and withdrawals without any delay.

Below we’ve outlined the steps needed to make a deposit using the WSOP NJ platform. However, the general principles are similar regardless of which poker site in Newjersey you use.

1. Log In and Hit the Deposit Button

Arrive at the WSOP NJ website, log in, and select the chip stack you want to play with. Then hit the DEPOSIT button at the bottom of the screen.

2. Choose a Payment Method

A pop-up window will appear, giving you an overview of your account and inviting you to make a deposit. Scroll down this page to the “DEPOSIT NOW” button and click it. You will now be faced with a list of potential payment methods, including ACH, PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, Paysafecard, and bank transfer.

legit online poker

3. Enter a Deposit Amount

Select one of those payment methods and type in the amount of money you wish to deposit. The minimum amount for most deposit methods is $10, though PayPal deposits must be at least $30. The maximum amount you can deposit at once is $2,999.99 (ACH transfers have a lower limit of $999.99). You can also set up installment payments via ACH and PayPal if you want to deposit $150 or more - more information on that can be found in section five.

4. Complete the Transaction

Once you hit “Deposit Now,” you’ll be redirected to a secure page controlled by the payment processor. From here, you need to enter the relevant details for your chosen payment method - for example, your debit card details if you’re using a Visa or Mastercard. Follow the on-screen instructions, entering all your details correctly.

If everything is in order, your transaction should be processed instantly. You’ll receive a confirmation screen, and you can return to the WSOP NJ lobby to play your chosen poker games.

Withdrawing Winnings

When you’re ready to cash out, the process is almost identical to making a deposit. The main difference is that you can only withdraw using ACH, PayPal, or bank transfer - so you should select one of those options when clicking the WITHDRAWALS button on the left-hand menu.

How long it takes to receive your funds depends on the withdrawal method you choose. ACH withdrawals can take two days to reach your bank account. Meanwhile, PayPal and bank transfer withdrawals typically take 4-5 days.

It’s worth noting that you can only withdraw to the same payment method you used to deposit. For example, if you deposited $50 using your Discover Card, you can only withdraw to that Discover Card. Additionally, you cannot withdraw bonus money until the relevant wagering requirements have been met.

Below we’ve outlined the steps required to make a withdrawal from WSOP.com NJ. However, the procedure is very similar if you’re withdrawing from 888poker.

1. Log In and Hit the Withdrawal Button

First you need to log in to WSOP NJ, select your chip stack, and hit the withdrawals button on the left-hand menu.

2. Select a Withdrawal Method and Amount

A pop-up window will appear, giving you an overview of your account. Scroll down to the “WITHDRAWALS” section and select either ACH, PayPal, or Bank Transfer as your method. Having done that, type in the amount of money you wish to withdraw.

3. Complete the Withdrawal Form

Once you’ve entered the amount, you’ll be asked to fill in a withdrawal form. This will require you to confirm your personal details and payment information. Having done that, click “Submit” to send the request.
