How to Play Nevada Online Poker

You don’t have to be a tech wizard to figure out how to play online poker in Nevada.  In fact it’s pretty straightforward:

  1. Check the Legal Status of Online Poker in Nevada. It’s already green-lighted so this step merely serves as an ego stroke for your intellect.
  2. Pick a Safe and Secure Nevada Real Money Online Poker Site. We review all the card rooms that get the requisite licence and determine where the action is. See our recommended site above for Nevada online poker.
  3. Create Your Account. Provide all relevant personal data as required including your name, residential address, date of birth etc. You may also be asked for a copy of your social security number for identity verification purposes. This is standard procedure under the US Patriot Act and ensures that no one sets up multiple accounts to defraud the system.
  4. Deposit Some Cash. This is the risky part since US banks consider online poker business accounts and therefore require their employees to close such accounts on principle. Don’t worry – all licensed and regulated Nevada poker sites provide safe, secure and efficient payment methods for deposits and withdrawals. They encrypt your sensitive data and never release it to third parties.  Accepted payment methods include credit cards, debit cards, prepaid cards, wire transfers and third-party eWallets like Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Skrill, Neteller, PaySafe, Interac and more. What’s more, deposits are usually processed instantly so you can start playing right away.
  5. Take Advantage of That Bonus! All legitimate online poker sites in Nevada offer attractive welcome bonuses to encourage new players to join. These can range from free tournament tickets to match-based deposits and they are all designed to boost your bankroll from the very beginning. Be sure to read the terms and conditions carefully to understand the rollover requirements because most bonuses must be earned over time rather than cashed out immediately.
  6. Play Cautiously. It’s easy to get carried away when you’ve got exciting poker games at your fingertips 24/7 but discipline is a critical component of successful banking. Withdraw some of your winnings along the way to prevent chasing losses. After all, you wanted to play Nevada online poker for real money – now you’re doing it!

Nevada Online Poker Laws

The Federal Wire Act of 1961 made it illegal for US residents to engage in online gambling. But the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in 2006 made it illegal for banks to process transactions related to online gambling.

This led to a crackdown on the industry and many poker rooms were forced to leave the US market. However, in 2011, the Department of Justice (DOJ) issued a opinion that the Wire Act only applied to sports betting and that other forms of online gambling were permitted at the state level. This paved the way for some states to legalize online poker and casino games. Nevada was quick to take advantage of this ruling and passed its own online gaming law in 2013. The first Nevada online poker site launched in April of that year. Today, three major operators dominate the market: WSOP.com NV and its 888poker network partner All American Poker EV and its liquidity share partner BetMGM Poker NV.

Why is Liquidity Sharing So Important for Nevada Online Poker?

Population size is the main reason why liability sharing is so important for Nevada poker online today. If you compare it to bigger states like , it has less than 3 million residents compared to nearly 20 million. That makes it difficult to generate enough traffic on a single site to offer good games around the clock. By sharing liquidity with another site or state, Nevada poker online sites can draw players from a larger pool and provide a better experience for everyone involved. This not only benefits the players with more game variety and better game selection but also helps the sites themselves stay competitive and viable in the long run. As a result, Nevada poker players can enjoy a more vibrant and sustainable online poker ecosystem.

Will More States Be Added to the Liquidity Share in the Future?

It’s certainly possible that more states will be added to the liquidity share in the future. Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware originally signed a MOU in 2017 to share player pools but Delware exited that agreement in 2018. As of now, only Nevada and New Jersey remain in the multi-state agreement and Pennsylvania almost joined in 2019 but nothing came of it. Pennsylvania currently has independent poker sites: .

Meanwhile Michigan recently joined the agreement in 2020 and players from WSOP MI and its partner BetMGM Poker MI can now play against gamblers from the Garden State and the Silver State. WSOP.ca in Canada also shares its player pool between Nevada, New Jersey and Ontario, Canada starting Apr 4, 2022.

Other states are also considering legislation to regulate online poker, which could potentially lead to even more liquidity sharing opportunities in the future. For example, Florida and California have been discussing whether to team up and form their own online poker market. Other states that might follow suit with online poker legislation include Virginia, Massachusetts, Illinois and New York. Only the might of the Department of Justice standing in the way of nationwide online poker however and that doesn't seem likely to happen any time soon after all these years.

History of Nevada Online Poker

Nevada was at the forefront of the online poker revolution in the early 2000s, passing Bill AB114 in 2001 that made it legal for residents to participate in “remote gaming” events. Although former Governor Kenny Guinn vetoed the bill due to concerns about lottery ticket sales over the internet, Nevada lawmakers overrode his decision a few days later.

However, following the UIGEA of 2006, Nevada chose not to exercise its rights and pursue intrastate licensing for online poker sites. Instead, several Nevada cardrooms agreed to pay a $50,000 license fee and relocate to costal states like California and New York in order to offer “private member” games to residents of those states. The rationale behind this strategy was that the UIGEA only prohibited gambling operators from accepting payments; it did not make online poker itself illegal for players. Therefore, these private member games operated outside the scope of the UIGEA.

Ultimately, this strategy failed when New York and California attorney generals issued cease-and-desist letters to the cardrooms in 2014. Nevada then began moving towards full licensure and regulation of online poker within its own borders. Ultimately, Nevada Senator Becky Harris introduced Bill AB114 in 2013, which would create a framework for intrastate online poker. Governor Brian Sandoval signed the bill into law on February 21, 2013 and the Nevada Gaming Control Board began drafting regulations in March.

The first Nevada online poker site, MGM’s UltimatePoker, received its license in November 2013 and launched on APril 30, 2013. WSOP.com followed suit on September 19, 2013 and quickly became the market leader. As we mentioned earlier, those two sites now share their player pools and dominate the market together with BetMGM Poker NV.
