Since the legalization of commercial casinos in 1993, more than 120 venues have opened their doors to players across the state. That number could soon double with online casinos set to launch in 2021. So, if you’re looking to hit the slots or table games in the Wolverine State, you won’t be short of options.

In this guide, we give you a complete list of all Michigan casinos. We cover commercial and tribal establishments, so you get a full picture of what’s available. As well as listing the best places to gamble your money, we provide location data and links to our reviews. This should help you decide which venue is right for you.

Michigan Indian Gaming Council

Before we reveal the MI casinos, it’s worth noting that 12 of the state’s 12 Tribes are members of the Michigan Indian Gaming Council (MIGC).

This council was formed in 1989 in response to the introduction of video slot machines in bars throughout the state. The MIGC argued that these machines violated a compact between the state of Michigan and the tribes. After a series of legal battles, a new compact was drawn up in 1993, known as Public Act 279. This allowed tribes to offer certain forms of Class III gaming in return for revenue shares with the state.

Today, there are 12 recognized Native American tribes in Michigan. They operate 12 casinos between them, offering everything from slot machines and poker to restaurants and entertainment arenas. If you want to experience authentic Indian gaming in Michigan, check out one or more of the following establishments:

It’s worth noting that three of Michigan’s casinos are located within hotels, meaning you can enjoy a overnight alongside your gaming session. Two of these properties are owned by the MGM Resorts group. Its two Detroit venues are connected by an internal walkway, making it easy to move between them.

Finally, it’s important to note that three casino boats still operate on the Great Lakes. While these establishments are classed as casinos, they offer very little in terms of amenities. Essentially, they’re large floating platforms in the middle of lakes Michigan, Huron, or Erie. Although they offer stunning views, particularly at sunset, they’re not ideal gaming destinations due to their lack of amenities.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer

The latest regulation to affect Michigan casinos came into effect in April 2020 when Governor Gretchen Whitmer ordered all establishments to close as part of measures to combat COVID-19. All 135 venues shut their doors to help limit the spread of the virus. When they were allowed to reopen on May 22, 2020, they had to adhere to strict social distancing rules and enhanced sanitation procedures in order to stay open. Thankfully, all venues are now back up and running, so you can visit any of the below establishments and enjoy a safe and secure gaming experience.

Southwest Michigan Casinos

There are four casinos in southwestern Michigan. Berrien Springs is home to Four Winds New Buffalo, while Harrington Racecourse & Casino and Jack’s Casino Parthenon Heights are both based in Jackson. The region’s only downtown casino is Gianna’s in Battle Creek. All four venues are around an hour and a half’s drive from South Bend International Airport.

Northeast Michigan Casinos

Moving northeast along the shores of Lake Michigan, you’ll find seven casinos in popular tourist destinations such as Traverse City, Leelanau, and Mackinac Island. Some of these towns are among the top summer vacation spots in Michigan. Known for their vineyards, cherry orchards, and sandy beaches, they attract millions of visitors each year. You’ll also find several national parks and nature reserves in this part of the world, including Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park and Hapstone Forest State Recreation Area.

If you fancy blending a spot of gambling with a vacation, this is the perfect region of the state. It takes just over two hours to reach the area from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport or Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City.

Northwest Michigan Casinos

Head north of Traverse City, and you’ll come across six more casinos dotted between Manistee and Ludington. These two towns are located on the shores of Lake Michigan and are within relatively easy driving distance of Muskegon and Grand Rapids. If you’re planning a trip to this part of Michigan, you may want to fly into Cadillac Airport or Muskegon County Airport. Both are around an hour’s drive from one or more casinos.

Central Michigan Casinos

You’ll find eight casinos in the central region of the state. Mount Pleasant is home to Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort, while its sister property, Dacey’s Downtown CASINO | BAR, is based in the town center. The region also contains four other established venues: FireKeepers Casino Hotel, Franks’ Place, Horseshoe Casino, and Island Resort & Casino. All four offer something a little different, whether it’s golf, live entertainment, RV sites, or hotel suites with private hot tubs.

Southeast Michigan Casinos

No guide to Michigan casinos would be complete without mentioning those in and around Detroit. Often referred to as the Motor City, this is where three of the state’s most iconic casinos can be found: MGM Grand Detroit, Greektown Casino-Hotel, and MotorCity Casino Hotel. In total, there are ten establishments in this part of Michigan. The others are situated in nearby communities such as Clinton Township, Roseville, and Shelby Township. If you’re traveling from Detroit Metro Airport, you’ll find many of these casinos are just a 20-30 minute drive away.

Upper Peninsula Casinos

No passenger ferries connect the Upper Peninsula (UP) with the rest of the state, so you’ll either have to take a plane or drive up. If you do decide to make the journey, you’ll find two casinos on the eastern edge of the UP. Kinross is home to Kings Club Casino, while nearby Manitowoc has the Oasis Hotel Casino. Both venues are situated on the shoreline of Lake Michigan and offer stunning views of the water. If you fancy a day trip, you can drive from Sault Ste. Marie to either establishment in around 45 minutes.

Michigan Online Casinos (2024)

The Legislation is there, the bill has even passed the house and the senate, but the Michigan online casino regulatory framework still needs to be approved by voters in the 2022 elections.

Best Poker Rooms in the US (2023 Version) - PokerListings

Once the regulatory Bill gets the green light, operators will have 9 months to apply for and receive a license. So, if all goes according to plan, we could see the first go-live launches in spring/summer 2023. Our listed MI casino partners will more than likely be among the first wave of operators going live.

Once the regulatory bill has been approved, we’ll update this section with the latest info regarding licensing and the first expected launch dates. In the meantime, you can click on the review buttons below to learn more about what each operator offers and what you can expect once the industry goes live.

Potential Online Casinos in Michigan

Although the regulatory bill still needs to vote, that doesn’t mean we don’t know what’s in store. The bill lays out exactly how remote gaming will work, so we already have details regarding licensing fees, tax rates, and the operators that will be licensed.

All in all, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) can license 20 online casino licenses. Each of the state’s three Detroit casinos -MGM, MotorCity, and Greektown-, can partner with two online operators, giving a total potential of 20 licenses. Additionally, the 12 tribal casinos each get their own license, meaning there are another 12 available.

So, we’re looking at a maximum of 32 online casino sites, although the MGCB can reduce this number if it feels that fewer licenses should be issued. Before the first sites go live, which could be in Summer 2021, the regulator will announce the list of licensed operators. We know most of them, as the cost of applying for a license was $500,000 for the paying in January 2021.

We expect some of the biggest names in the online casino industry to go live in Michigan from 2023 onwards. Based on the list below, we could see the likes of , DraftKings, BetMGM, Golden Nugget, and more enter the Michigan market:

These are some of the leading online brands in the US and beyond. So, with any luck, Michigan players will benefit from world-class platforms, hundreds of casino games, and some of the biggest welcome bonuses around when the industry goes live.

To give you an idea of what these sites might look like and what you can expect, we’ve provided a few snapshots from some of our top-ranked .
