MGM Grand Casinos Outside US

MGM Grand Paris: Opened in October 2021, this MGM Grand casino isn’t actually inside the city limits of Paris. In fact, it’s located in Enghien-les-Bains, a commune in the Val-d’Oise department, Hauts-de-Seine region of France. Despite the distance, the resort is only a 30 minute drive from central Paris thanks to excellent transport links. As well as being the first MGM Grand outside the USA, it’s also the first international partnership between MGM Resorts International and Lorenzo Cadelato’s AC Hotel services.

In terms of size, MGM Grand Paris isn’t as big as some. Covering an area of 7,500sq m, it’s got 100 gaming tables and 200 slot machines as well as 24/7 sports betting via Le Théâtre du Parieur unique to partypoker. Add another 7 restaurants and 6 bars into the mix plus live music and entertainment etc and it’s still smaller than some of MGM Resorts International’s bigger properties in Nevada and Michigan. However, everything is on a grand scale.

With 80,000 sq ft of meeting space, MGM Grand Paris can accommodate up to 10,000 people for exhibitions or conferences (reduced to 6,500 if you want to sit them all down). There are also 16 conference rooms, three of which can be divided into smaller spaces. On the hotel front, MGM Grand Paris has 242 chic and stylish guest rooms over six floors. So although it might not be the biggest MGM Grand casino outside the USA, what it lacks in size, it makes up for in style and accessibility.

MGM MUTUAL (YANGZHENG)****: Located in China, MGM MUTUAL was rebranded from MGM Grand Shenzhen in 2018. That may seem relatively recent but, due to China’s censorship laws, the company had to change its name because it infringed local regulations. However, everything else about this integrated casino-resort, just across the border from Hong Kong, remains the same.

Spread over 2.3 million square feet, MGM MUTUAL features 454 rooms and suites as well as 15 food and beverage outlets. Elsewhere, there are theatrical shows, lifestyle pools, spas, and fitness centres as well as 170,000 square foot VIP gambling complex. Even with a changed name, MGM MUTUAL cements the MGM Grand name in China and beyond.

Must-Play Slots You've Probably Never Heard Of

As you can see from the MGM Grand owner list above, the brand stretches further than most and that trend looks set to continue as MGM Resorts International forms new partnerships around the world. Before we explore potential future developments, here’s a quick recap of how we’ve gotten to where we are today…

Timeline – When was MGM Grand Founded?

It’s often said that timing is everything and that certainly rings true in the case of MGM Grand Hotels Inc. and its eventual evolution into MGM Resorts International. Launched during a boom period in the US, MGM Grand hotels were always going to be popular. However, few could have predicted just how much of an impact these venues would go on to have.

1986

The brand began with the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. It cost $125 million to build, had 2,995 rooms and 170,000 sq ft of casino space. On that basis alone, it was the largest hotel-casino in the world when it opened its doors on December 1, 1986. Things looked even brighter in 1987 when the MGM Grand Macau went live.

However, tragedy struck in October 1987 when a fire ripped through the Las Vegas hotel. Either starting in or spread by elevators, the blaze began on the second floor and quickly engulfed the building. Sadly 85 people lost their lives and hundreds more were injured.

Although the cause of the fire wasn't clear for many months, it later transpired that poor wiring and substandard repair work were to blame. When the dust had settled, MGM Mirage (as the company was known after a merger in 2004) agreed to pay out nearly $150 million in compensation to victims and their families. This marked the end of the original MGM Grand hotels and paved the way for a new era.

1991

MGM Grand Air in Chicago O’Hare opened in 1991. Offering easy access to flights, this MGM Grand casino was different from the hotel-casinos in Las Vegas. Instead of rooms and suites, it had restaurant and shopping outlets as well as convention and entertainment areas.

1993

Another departure from the regular model, MGM Grand Marina in Miami and MGM Grand Hotel in Detroit arrived in 1993. Unlike the MGM Grand hotel-casinos in Las Vegas, these two venues didn’t have the right to offer gaming facilities on site. However, they did have hotel rooms and shuttle buses that ran to nearby casinos. The former had marina facilities while the latter was attached to the Greektown Casino Hotel.

1994 to 1996

Between 1994 and 1996, four more MGM Grand casinos joined the party. The MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Reno underwent a massive refurbishment before reopening under the famous lion logo. MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Primm, Nevada and MGM Grand Paris in Bossier City followed in 1994 before the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Mississippi opened in 1996.

Of these venues, the Miss. Is the oldest as it’s still trading today. Indeed, following a series of acquisitions and mergers, it’s now known as MGM Tower at Beau Rivage Resort & Casino. Situated in Biloxi, it’s part of the MGM Resorts International family along with MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Detroit (now known as MotorCity Casino Hotel).

Elsewhere, the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Reno closed in 2003 and was subsequently demolished to make way for the MGM Theatre at VTC. We've already mentioned the tragic tale of MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. That means only the MGM Grand Parish in Bossier City has bitten the dust. Damaged by floodwater in 2015 and 2016, the venue closed and hasn't reopened.

1997

From the ashes of the old MGM Grand hotels rose MGM Grand Hotels & Homes. In addition to traditional casinos, such as MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and Foxwoods MGM Grand Casino in Connecticut, the new company acquired non-gaming brands such as Grand Legacy Hotel & Suites in Salt Lake City and MGM Grand Hotel At Disneyland in California.

Indeed, the connection with The House of Mouse was maintained when MGM Grand at Fox Convention Center in Las Vegas changed its name to Mandalay Bay in 1999 and the MGM Grand Hotel at Disneyland stopped using the lion logo in 2001. Other changes took place behind the scenes too because, in 2002, MGM Grand Hotels & Homes became MGM Mirage.

2003 to 2005

Partnering with other companies became a key feature of MGM Mirage’s strategy during the early 2000s. As well as opening properties under the Borgata and Gold Strike Casino brands, MGM Mirage linked up with MGM Grand Paradise in Macau, Partouche Clubs in France and MGM Grand Paris on Europe’s party scene. Oh, and there was a small online operation too...

MGM Grand Online Casinos: 2003 to Present

For many people, the first time they saw the MGM Grand name online was in 2014 when MGM Grand Hotel at Fox Convention Center became Mandalay Bay. That may seem strange seeing as the first MGM Grand casino online launched all the way back in 2003. Indeed, MGM Grand Paris on Europlex was one of many sites powered by Boss Media / Parlay Entertainment and part of the early .S Market.

Marketed as a place for “young, affluent urban professionals,” MGM Grand Paris offered roulette, blackjack, video poker, and slots provided by leading developers such as . Initially successful, the dot.com bubble burst in 2007 and MGM Grand Paris closed. However, the MGM Grand online casino network lived on.

From 2010, MGM Resorts International formed various partnerships that allowed it to leverage the MGM Grand name in New Jersey, Europe, and beyond. Although none of those sites are active today, one still is ...

Partying hard in Europlex’s honor was MGM Grand Chicago Party Pit – one of many skins on Eurobet’s network. Powered by Bally Tech and regulated by the state of Illinois, the MGM Grand Chicago Casino went live in 2020. Featuring slots, video poker, virtual sports, and table games, it’s very much in the tradition of the MGM Grand online casinos that came before it.

Today, MGM Grand Las Vegas at partypoker is the latest manifestation of the company’s move into the iGaming sphere. A result of , this online casino and sportsbook went live in July 2020 under the Golden Nugget’s license. Boasting a wide range of real money and play money games, from slots to Texas Hold’em tournaments, it quickly became .

With MGM Resorts International owning the partypoker license in Michigan, that brand returned in 2021. Meaning partypoker is now available in two US states with more to come. All of which leads us nicely onto …

Best Online Casinos in United States of America

As you can see, MGM Resorts International has lots of tricks up its sleeve. From the East Coast to the West, and everywhere in between, the group is expanding and evolving. As for the future of MGM Grand hotels and casinos, anything is possible. The brand has always been dynamic and adaptable. If recent history is anything to go by, we can expect to see MGM Grand popping up in all kinds of exciting places around the globe.

Competitors to MGM Resorts

It goes without saying that MGM Grand is one of the biggest names in the gaming industry. However, like all businesses, it faces competition from rival organizations. These are some of the companies that are vying for space in the casino sector.

  • Caesars Entertainment
26 venues in the US, including Caesars Palace Las Vegas
Known for: Iconic properties, loyalty program

  • Wynn Resorts
4 venues in the US, including Wynn Las Vegas
Known for: Luxury accommodations, fine dining

  • Boyd Gaming
29 casinos in the US, including The Californian
Known for: Regional focus, value proposition

  • Ladbroke Coral Group
3,500+ retail locations in UK and Belgium, coral.online
Known for: Traditional high street presence, digital transformation

  • Gala Coral Group

Best Casino Games (Plus, the Worst Ones to Play)
  • Aruze Gaming
    Electronic gaming machines and systems
Known for: Innovative technology, global reach

These aren’t necessarily the biggest operators out there. For example, Genting Casinos and Resorts dwarfs both MGM Resorts and Genting Singapore Limited in terms of revenue. However, it doesn’t have the global reach of the MGM Grand name. Similarly, Caesars Entertainment has more properties than MGM Grand, but it doesn’t have quite the same cachet.

That doesn’t mean MGM Grand should rest on its laurels. Every one of these companies poses a threat, either now or in the future. Some, like Boyd Gaming and Kaiser Ludwigshafen, are strong in their respective regions. Others, such as Ladbroke Coral Group and Gala Coral, have a strong offline presence that they’re trying to connect online. Finally, firms such as Okada Manila, Crown Resorts, and Galaxy Entertainment are targeting the lucrative Asia-Pacific market.

If there’s one thing the MGM Grand casinos list illustrates, it’s the fact this company has a global vision. Yes, some of its rivals operate internationally, but none have the same reach as MGM Resorts International. Of course, maintaining that advantage takes resources, dedication, and foresight. Based on the expansion plans outlined above, it seems the current MGM Grand leadership team has those qualities in abundance.
