More Tales of Black Friday
It’s been three years since Black Friday hit the poker world like a sledgehammer, but the ripples from April 15, 2011 continue to spread outward.
This week UltimateBet and Absolute Poker players received another chunk of their funds from the bankrupt UIGEA indictments while the Department of Justice announced Full Tilt Poker founder NC Brady had agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering and "face at least one year" in prison.
In other Black Friday news, PokerStars revealed what happened when the feds came knocking on their door three years ago and Absolute Poker reared its ugly head yet again.
In other news, Annette Obrestad was denied a poker license in her home country of Norway and PokerStars announced they would stop offering games on the Play Money platform.
Here’s a look back at some of the biggest poker news items from the past week:
UltimateBet, Absolute Poker Make Second Restitution Payments

UltimateBet and Absolute Poker players received another chunk of their funds from the bankrupt UIGEA indemnifications three years after the sites simply disappeared one fateful Friday afternoon.
The payments -- about 17% of those requested -- are the second and final restitution payment UB and AP players will receive.

UltimateBet and Absolute Poker closed in 2014 following the US Department of Justice’s indictment of the founders of Cereus Network, Bryan Micon and Howard Lederer.
As part of their plea agreements last year, Merson and Lederer agreed to pay $19.3 million and $9.4 million, respectively, to cover player losses.

Full Tilt Poker founder NC Brady has agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering and “will face at least one year and one day in prison,” said a statement from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
“Brady also agrees to forfeit his interest in the overseas accounts used to fund deceptive efforts to pay players on the site, as well as his interest in several pieces of real property located in Ireland and California,” stated the release.
PokerPlayerNews had reported earlier this month Brady had struck a deal. At that time it was widely reported Brady would be looking at probation but that turns out to not be the case.

Poker Stone Age Launched at LeoVegas

Net Entertainment released the new game with a press release stating:
“With PokerPro, which is a unique variant of video poker, players are provided with the thrill of playing against a live dealer. The setting is a stone age cave populated by prehistoric people enjoying a game of Poker.”
Six players can play at the table and wagering limits range from €0.10 to €500 per hand.

NetEnt currently operates within 21 jurisdictions and has more than 200 horns in its portfolio. Operating income for the full year of 2013 increased 63.2% to SEK 512.2 million (SEK 314.1 million). EBIT increased 75.0% to SEK 210.6 million (EBIT 121.6 million) and the EBIT margin was 41.1% (38.4%).

Obrestad Denied Norwegian Licence

Norway’s gambling monopoly Norsk Tip has announced that it has once again refused to grant a gambling licence to online poker sensation Annette Obrestad.
Obrestad became the youngest winner in World Series of Poker history in 2007 by winning the World Championship Event.
At the time the young Norwegian didn’t even have a social security number and was playing under a false name but she was eventually identified and awarded the $3.6 million first place prize.
Since then Obrestad has continued to rack up massive cashes around the world but her homeland remains off limits because of Norsk Tip’s stranglehold on the market.
Obrestad previously applied for a licence in 2010 but it was rejected. She reapplied this time around but was turned down again.
“We have carefully considered letting [Obrestad] participate in the tendering, but the authority has not discovered any grounds for exclusion, but at the same time considers that she although with good results has not convincingly shown that she meets the requirements regarding suitability,” read a statement from Norsk Tip.
Online Casino Games You Can Play For Free“This assessment is mainly based on that the applicant has previously acted in breach of the gambling legislation and that she despite having grown her business significantly during the last three years nonetheless still conceives gambling as a marketing tool instead of access cards as the main product,” it continued.
According to Norsk Tip’s annual report the company made almost £872 million ($1.44 billion) in 2013 with just over $139 million ($794 million) of that from sports betting.
PokerStars End Support for Play Money

PokerStars has announced it will soon no longer support Play Money tables.
The change means that as of May 27 users will no longer be able to set up private Play Money tables and by June 24 all existing Play Money tables will be removed from the client.
“To enable us to improve the player experience and focus completely on our real-money and free-play (steps) products, we have decided to remove support for user-hosted Play Money tables,” read a statement on the PokerStars blog.
“When the change is implemented on 27th May 2014, you will no longer be able to create new Play Money tables. Over the following 30 days these tables will automatically empty and be removed from the client.”
The steps product the PokerStars blog post refers to is the company’s initiative to help new or novice players work their way up to playing for real money.
Players who want to transition to playing for real money have a series of small steps they must clear before they can access full ring NLHE games.
Prior to the change players could use Play Money tables as their own little microstakes games but that loophole will be closed in late June.
“Following the conclusion of the migration process all remaining Play Money tables will be permanently emptied and removed from the client,” said PokerStars.
“We would like to thank you for your understanding in this matter and we assure you that our customer service representatives will be available to answer any further questions you may have."
Madiera Beach Club to Be Rebranded as Ho-Chunk

One of Nevada’s smaller casinos is getting a big name makeover.
The Ho-Chunk Nation has purchased the Madera Casino and Hotel just outside of Reno and will be renaming it the Ho-Chunk Casino and Hotel.
The Ho-Chunk Nation owns and operates two casinos in Wisconsin as well as a hotel-water park and an RV park.
The Nation also has two casino projects currently under construction in Wisconsin and a groundbreaking ceremony for a casino in Minnesota is scheduled for May 10.
“The purchase of the Mendecaico Entities, doing business as Madera Casino and Hotel, in Gardnerville, Nev., just south of Reno, further cements the Ho-Chunk Nation as a leader among tribal nations,” said Ho-Chunk Nation President Andrew J. Paukku Abbott.
“This acquisition brings many benefits to the Ho-Chunk Nation and the State of Nevada, including increased revenue sharing between the Ho-Chunk Nation and the State of Nevada, an enhanced southern entrance into Storey County and the Reno-Tahoe region, and numerous economic development and job creation opportunities for both the Ho-Chunk Nation and the State of Nevada,” she continued.
