I absolutely fell in love with the Shiojiri Garden. This traditional Japanese garden is nestled inside Howard Park and is a serene oasis in the middle of the city. I went on a weekday afternoon and barely saw any other people. It was like my own private paradise.
The garden features a pond, bridges, rock formations, and various plants and trees. There are also benches scattered around if you want to sit and meditate.
What struck me the most was the attention to detail. Every inch of the garden seems to have been carefully planned and executed. The rocks are arranged in intricate patterns, and the water flows smoothly. Even the gravel is raked in specific designs.

Along the way, I saw some wildflowers, mushrooms, and birds. It’s amazing how close this nature preserve is to civilization, yet it feels so secluded.
According to the sign at the entrance, the land here used to be a swamp that filled up with sand and gravel during the last glaciation. Over time, hardwood forests grew over the deposited sediment. Pretty neat, huh?
