Google doodles you should play before their casino games go

  • On September 30th, 2019 Google will be removing their free games from their home page.
  • Some of these games have been so popular they caused delays in traffic.
  • If you haven’t played all of the past Google Doodle casino games, now is the time.

On my commute to work, I usually take a quick glance at the Google homepage to see what “doodle” is up that day. Over the last few years, some of those doodles were even interactive, allowing me to pass the time on the subway instead of checking email.

If you’re a casino player, like myself, you might have noticed how many of these interactives were based on gambling games. Some were obvious choices, like poker and roulette. While others took inspiration from video poker machines or even tripe for bingo players.

Sadly, all good things must come to an end, and this looks to be the case with these Google casino games as well. On September 30th, 2019, they are going to be removed from the search engine.

Before they are gone forever, I think it’s only fair we pay our respect by looking back some of the best casino-themed Google doodles of all time.

6. Pinball (2010)

Pinball Google Cascade

When Google wants to celebrate something, they often go big. This has proven to be true more than once when it comes to their casino-related doodles as well.

The first example of this was on June 23rd, 2010, when they dedicated an entire line of their search bar to a classic pinball machine inspired game.

While this one didn’t have any traditional casino elements, you could arguably consider it inspired by the old Stern Electronics Casino pinball machine.

What made this one special was that you controlled the flippers of all three pinball tables, which made racking up a score much easier than on a regular cabinet.

If you find yourself playing this one again before it gets taken down, try to focus on the middle lane, as that’s where most points can be earned.

5. Rubik’s Cube Poker (2010)

Rubik's Cube Poker Google’s 35th birthday fell on a Saturday in 2010, which meant they could spend a bit more time celebrating than usual.

To honor the occasion, they created a mosaic out of various Google logos, put it in the shadow, and added a twist by making it as big Rubik’s cube. To make matters even better, each side of the puzzle was a different game, with one of them being Texas Hold’em poker.

If you know how to play poker, the game should be easy enough to figure out. The rub is, of course, solving the cube, so you can get to the other games.

4. Sweet Cathedral (2013)

There have been rumors that this particular Google doodle was intended to be a slot machine. Even though nothing was ever confirmed, the symbols on the reels - candy, lollipops, gummi bears, etc. - leave very little room for speculation.

Once you line up three identical items, you get to play a bonus game, where you tilt your phone to roll a ball around a maze filled with obstacles.

Of all the gambling related Google doodles, this one was probably the most successful at causing delays because people just wanted to keep playing their candy slots.

If you’ve ever played air hockey at an arcade, you’ll immediately recognize what Google’s 2011 doodle was modeled after.

For those who haven’t had the pleasure, the object of the game is score four goals on your opponent.

In this version, you compete against the computer, which isn’t that difficult considering it always goes for the same spot. Once you master this one, try to beat your high score by seeing how many goals you can get in a row.

2. Pac-Man (2019)

!Google Pac-Man](https://www.google.com/) Probably the most famous of all Google doodle casino games, the Pac-Man interpretation took the world by storm when it was released on May 21st, 2019, to celebrate what would have been Toru Iwatani’s 80th birthday.

The game plays just like the original, except you only have one life, and there’s no continuing if you get ghostbusted.

What makes this one special is that the maze changes every half hour to present a new challenge. As you progress, your score also appears on a leaderboard for bragging rights.

Seeing how high you can climb is definitely a gamble since the mazes get increasingly harder to navigate, making it easier to become pac-dot sushi for Blinky and friends.

You knew this list had to end with this one.

As far as Google casino games go, this one was the most obvious choice to include as the search engines’ logo pays homage to a French spinning wheel that’s been beloved by gamblers for over two centuries.

Unlike most other doodles, this one wasn’t interactive for everyone. Instead, users in France were treated to short animated film that showed how the game works.

Whether you call it euro wheel, French wheel, or European wheel, there’s no denying that the game has stood the test of time – almost three times as long as Google itself.

I find it rather amusing that the company’s logo, which has been around since 1998, is younger than one of the oldest casino games in existence.

Speaking of which, if you want to try some modern spins of roulette, check out these titles below:

I mentioned earlier that when Google wants to celebrate something; they tend to go big. What I didn’t tell you was that they have also recreated their logo into other casino games throughout history.

Here are two more examples of casino themed Google doodle games that didn’t make my top five picks but are still worth mentioning.

Balooin (2013)

To ring in 2013, the Japanese Google team paid tribute to their country’s love of video games and arcades with an interpretation of baloopanner, a localized version of whac-a-mole.

Instead of using mallet to try and smack the mole heads as they popped up, your job was to use the search bar to bump them off with a virtual hammer.

The goal, of course, was to keep as many moleheads from escaping as possible.

Tennis (2012)

Another Olympic themed Google doodle from 2012, this one let you control the serving, returning, and movement of a white paddle ball player against a field of blue representing water.

Red represents the fluffy yellow tennis balls, which bounce erratically like nobody’s business.

Your goal is to return 20 of them before your avatar misses and loses a point. Get the score to 20, and you win the match.

It might sound simple, but trust me, trying hitting return on this one when the balls start bouncing all over the place.

Why Is Google Removing These Games?

Seeing how popular these Google casino games have been, it came as quite a shock to many when they announced they were taking them down forever.

Casinos Where You Can Gamble in Ohio - Are They Legal?

According to a statement given to The Verge, it just got to be too much to handle with all the attention they required.

After more than two years of regularly releasing new Interstitials, we’re moving away to focus on other products and ideas. It has been a great opportunity to reach and engage with users in a fun way on significant days, and we are proud of what we have accomplished. As with everything we do at Google, we aim to improve the user’s search experience. Our regular Doodles, the occasional Doodle 4 Google contest, and the hundreds of Doodle games that will continue to run were all designed with the user’s search experience in mind. Our more complex Interstitial Doodles, however, often drive higher bounce rates and lower navigation rates to other pages on the same site or the wider web, which negatively impacts users in the long run. We believe it’s the right choice for Google to refocus our energy on those Doodles — especially when we hear from so many of you that our year-round Doodles put a consistent smile on your faces.

In non-tech speak, what they are saying is that people playing their games left the search page, aka bounced, which means they couldn’t serve them ads. In the grand scheme of things, that’s not a good thing.

Another reason why these Google casino games won’t be coming back is because creating them is hard. Unlike the static logos we’re used to seeing, these interpretations were animations or fully functional games built into the search bar.

Having a team dedicate themselves to creating fun distractions for us to play while we’re waiting for Google to alter its index is one thing. Taking resources away from other projects to maintain them is another.

Enjoy Them While They Last

Like anything else in life that brings us joy, these Google doodle casino games are going to be gone sooner than later.

Whether you lost time at work or school playing these games, they brought a smile to your face, which is really all that matters in the end.

If you haven’t had a chance to play all of these casino themed games yet, I highly recommend taking your breaks this week to do so. Trust me, as soon as September 30th, 2019, hits, they will be gone forever.

And who knows? Maybe one day Google will change their minds and bring another roulette or online casino slot themed game for us to enjoy.
