Dice have been around for thousands of years and have been used for both gaming and , too.

In fact, the oldest dice ever found date back to the 6th century AD in Egypt.

But if you want to spice things up and try your hand at gambling with dice in some more traditional ways, here are two great options to try out.

Hazard

Hazard is an old English game which is very similar to craps in many ways.

The biggest difference between the two is that you need to roll a 7 or an 11 to win on the come out throw in hazard whereas you need to roll a 7 or an 11 not to lose in craps.

Another key difference is that there are multiple bets and side bets you can make in hazard which include:

  • Single Hazard – This is the main even where you’re hoping to roll a 7 or an 11 on the come out toss. If you don’t roll a seven or eleven you move the pointer to the Off-Take space.
  • Double Hazard – This is another main bet where you need to roll a double to win. A double of six or eight loses. Just like with single hazard if you miss the mark you move the marker to the Off Take space.
  • Back Hazard – To win this bet you need to roll a six or an eight. A double of six or eight will push your wager. If you lose you move the pointer to the Hazard Space.
  • Passe Dix – In order to win this bet you need to roll a number lower than the pointer number. For example, if the pointer is on six you would need to roll five or below.
  • Middles – There are four possible middle spaces (4, 5, 6, 7) and you can bet on all of them or pick individuals. Winning this bet pays 2:1.
  • Come – Once the come out roll has occurred you can make a come bet. This works exactly the same as the main bets. Moving the pointer isn’t allowed for come bets.

Chuck a Luck

Chuck a luck is a super simple three die game where you try to roll certain numbers to win.

It’s often associated with carnivals and fairs but you can definitely play it with your friends and gamble some money on it.  

Here is how a chuck a luck dice game works:

  • The player makes their bet
  • The dice are scooped up and shaken in the chicken wire cage
  • The dice are tossed onto the playing surface
  • The dice are rolled until the player loses
  • The casino pays out the winning bets
  • The dice are ready for the next round once the dealer picks them up

You make your wagers on where you think the majority of the dice will land on. 

For example, if you bet on “three of a kind” you need all three dice to be the same number to win.

Cuckoo

Cuckoo is a traditional English card game that’s typically played with four players in teams of two. However, you can obviously adjust the rules and play with however many people you want.

Here is how you play cuckoo, one of the top card games for gambling, especially with friends:

  1. Each team is dealt six cards each and the rest are placed face down to create a draw pile.
  2. The top card of the face down pile is turned over and placed next to it to start the discard pile.
  3. The first team to go picks up the card on the discard pile and they have to decide whether the next card they draw should be added to their hand or discarded.
  4. If they draw a card that matches the rank or suit of the card on the discard pile they get to cuckoo. Cuckooing means the team can immediately discard two cards and take both of their opponents’ cards in the middle. Their opponents can then follow suit.
  5. If they draw a joker they can immediate cuckoo without having to match a card on the discard pile.
  6. Teams score points every time they cuckoo. Initially you cumulate points by cuckooing; four cards is one point, eight is two, and so forth. Later on in the round you get bonus points for bigger cuckoos.
  7. Once a team has reached 15 points they win.
  8. The losing team has to buy the winners a round.

Casino

Casino is a French card game that uses large faces cards known as chaseurs or hunters. The object of the game is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards. 

To start the game the player on the dealer’s left plays a card face up on the table. Then they have to follow that up with a card from their hand. So, for example, if they play the eight of diamonds they would have to play any card from their hand.

Play continues clockwise around the table until everyone has put a card down. 

When the second to last card has been put down the player who puts down the last card gets to be the hunter. The hunter is basically the dealer for this hand and they have to attempt to catch players with no cards by leading with a specific rank or suit.

After the first hand has been played the hunter chooses a rank or suit to begin the next hand. For example, “spades” or “queens.” They lead with the chosen rank or suit and follow the same way they did when it wasn’t their turn. 

Players who have the chosen rank or suit in their hand can play it right away. Otherwise they have to draw a card from the deck. If they draw a card that matches the required rank or suit they can immediately play another card. 

Players who can’t match the required rank or suit have to draw another card. If you get stuck with a card that you can’t play you have to keep it in your hand. The round ends when all players have played all of their cards.

Hunter gives each player who has cards a chance to get out of having to give a card to the hunter. This happens when a player leads with a card that the player with the most cards of that rank or suit has a lower value face card. For example, if the player with the most threes has just a three of clubs and you have a three of spades, you lead with your three of spades. 

If the hunter doesn’t catch anyone they’re forced to take a card from the deck to end their turn. 

The game continues like this until someone runs out of cards. That person is declared the winner of casino and, of course, you can gamble money on the outcome of each hand.

If you like playing card games where you have to pay attention this is right up your alley. As far as fun card gambling games go, you can’t go wrong with a rousing game of casino.

Kings

Kings is a fast paced and crazy drinking game designed for four players. However, you can definitely squeeze in more if you really wanted to.

To play you’re going to need a deck of cards without the twos. 

Here’s how you play:

  • All the numbered cards represent the number of sips you have to take
  • The face cards represent three drinks
  • With no twos, whenever a king comes up it’s called “everybody’s gotta drink”. How much you have to drink is decided by the person who picks up the king
  • Whoever picks up the king has to choose one other player who also has to drink what the picker chooses
  • Queens mean you have to ask a question
  • Aces mean you have to tell a story, but the first letter of that story has to be from the word the pickerchooses
  • When all the cards have been picked put the twos back in and start again

Like I said, kings is a really fast drinking game that’s perfect for getting hammered and gambling on some non traditional wagers.

Ring of Fire

Ring of Fire is another popular drinking card game that was supposedly made famous by Jonathan Burns, aka Dave Navarro, on an episode of . 

Unlike kings there isn’t a specific amount of players needed to play ring of fire. However, the sweet spot seems to be three to six.

Here’s how you play ring of fire:

  1. Place all the cards face down in a circle. The larger the ring the longer the game.
  2. All players put down a bet.
  3. The first player draws a card from anywhere in the ring.
  4. Whatever suite the card is in corresponds to a certain drinking rule that the player drawn must drink to. Here are the rules:
  5.  = player has to choose another player to down their drink
  6.  = player has to down their whole drink
  7.  = player has to do shots with the person on their right
  8.  = player has to give another player an amount of their drink measured by the suits’ pip count
  9.  Joker (if using an expansion pack): Everyone has to down their drink
  10.  = everyone but the player has to down their drink

Again, like kings, ring of fire is a quick game meant to get you and your friends drunk quickly. Add some friendly wagers on top and you’ve got yourself a party game that will be played over and over again.

On a personal note, ring of fire is easily one of my favorite drinking games. I wouldn’t recommend playing it alone, though. Trust me.

Bet on Battleship

Battleship is a classic board game designed to waste a rainy Sunday afternoon and help develop young minds. Or something like that.

What you may not know is that you can turn battleship into a really fun game where you can gamble on the outcome.

Instead of just playing for fun you can easily place wagers on each other to make things interesting. Who knows? Maybe even turn that rainy Sunday afternoon into a moderately stressful one.

To set up the board game version of battleship gamble simply lay out the board as you normally would and designate one side as “the house.”

Decide on a wager for each grid location and gamble away. Remember, the object of the game is to sink all of your opponent’s ships.

Now, you could just play regular battleship this way but where’s the fun in that? There are a few different variations/twists to the classic board game you can add to amp up the action and the ability to gamble on battleship.

First Blood

First blood is a simple twist on battleship where instead of trying to destroy the entire fleet you just have to hit any ship at all.

This version of battleship can either be one-on-one or you can turn it into a multiplayer battle royale style matchup. If you go the latter route the safe zones are cut in half until only one player is left.

Safe zones are halved by drawing a line down the middle of the unhit sections.

Capture the Flag

Similar to first blood, capture the flag is a simple twist on the original game where instead of trying to sink all of the ships you just have to capture them.

How you capture them depends on the size of the ship. Here’s how it works:

  • Submarine - Hit the sub at least two times
  • Destroyer - Hit the destroyer at least three times
  • Cruiser - Hit the cruiser at least four times
  • Battleship - Hit the battleship at least five times
  • Aircraft carrier - Hit the aircraft carrier 9 times

Again, you can either play one-versus-one or make it a free for all with safe/unsafe zones.

Last Ship Floating

Last ship floating is almost the exact opposite of capture the flag.

In this version of gambling on battleship you sink everything except one of your own ships. The goal is to be the first player to sink everything except one of your own ships. The last ship floating wins.

Like most of these variations you can either play head-to-head or crank the chaos up a notch and play with more than two people.

Safe zones work exactly the same as they do in capture the flag.

Blind Battle

Blind battle is a cool variation of the original that adds a level of complexity and difficulty. 

The concept is that neither player can look at their boards at all during the game. All attacks are called out verbally and kept track of on a separate piece of paper.

Since you can’t look at your own board you’ll have to remember where you’ve already shot and where your opponent has shot. Talking is, of course, allowed.

Gambling on battleship in its various forms is a fun way to waste some time and put some skin in the game. If you haven’t played battleship with money on the line I highly recommend giving it a shot.

Not only is it a fun activity to do with friends, but it also helps sharpen the ol’ grey matter.

Roosh Reviews Roosh: The Tower Card Game

Roosh is an incredibly simple two player card game that only takes about five minutes to play. It was invented by Roosh Valizadeh, creator of Return of Kings and the Daygame Overkill system.

I had the pleasure of hanging out with Roosh a little while back in Medellin, Colombia and he handed me a prototype of his card game. After a few rounds I was hooked.

Fast forward a month or so and the final product showed up at my doorstep. Another winner, Roosh.

Anyway, you can play this one solo by gambling on each round or with another person and gamble and let the loser of each round buy the winner a round somewhere. Up to you.

To start the game each player starts with five cards and places one card face down as their tower. The rest of the deck is placed facedown between the players to create a draw pile.

The top card of the draw pile is turned over and placed next to it to create the discard pile.

On each turn a player draws two cards from the draw pile. They have to discard one card and can choose to discard the other to build their tower. 

Cards can either be discarded higher or the same as their current tower height. Suits don’t matter.
