Why Play Free Casino Games?

There are plenty of good reasons to take a break from betting real money and instead play free online casino games every once in a while. Here are just a few.

Practice Real Money Games for Free

The first reason to play free online casino games concerns something of a paradox: If you’ve already played these types of games before and are familiar with how they work, that experience is actually the wrong type of practice for learning how to play a specific version of a slot or other casino game.

Every title – whether it comes from a top software provider or not – has its own quirks regarding denominations, paylines, bonus features, and more. The only way to truly get used to those minutiae is to study them by playing that particular game - and playing it for free is the best method for doing so.

Of course, if you are new to online casinos, it may be helpful to read up on the .

Try Out New Types of Games

If you’re an experienced casino player, you likely have a number of favorite titles you return to again and again. That’s a great way to make sure you always have a reliable thrill available, but it can also keep you from discovering other great games you may enjoy.

Playing free online casino games is an excellent way to step outside your comfort zone. Whether you’ve never tried a particular type of game or are simply looking for a fresh perspective on what the modern online casino has to offer, you may be surprised at just how much fun can be had with some light, obligation-free gaming.

Have Some Fun Without Risking Money

At the end of the day, many of us play online casino games because we enjoy them. The rush of an exciting spin or roll, the anticipation of a close bonus round, and the joy of coming out on top in a high-stakes situation are all part of what makes these games so appealing - and none of those moments require real money wagers.

Free online casino games allow players to experience all the positives of these experiences without having to worry about losing cash. After all, winning money is great - but the main reason we play is because online casino games are fun.

Are Online Casino Games Rigged When They’re Free?

Some players new to online gambling may worry that free casino games are rigged in some fashion. After all, if the casino isn’t making money off Customer A (the free player), perhaps they are making it up by skewing the odds against Customer B (the real money player).

Fortunately, that is not the case.

All reputable online casinos use the same Random Number Generator software for their free games as they do for their real money versions. This means the outcomes you see on the screen are entirely random and unaffected by whether or not you’re using play money.

In fact, the only difference between free and real money versions of most online casino games is the look of the graphical user interface. The actual math and RNG software powering the title remain identical in both cases.

The only time this is not the case regards bonuses and promotions. As mentioned earlier in this piece, many online casinos feature “players club” style loyalty programs that award comps based on the amount of real money wagering a patron completributes.

In these instances, the casino may offer “play money” versions of certain games that contribute to such promotions at a reduced rate or not at all. However, this has nothing to do with the integrity of the game itself.

In short: No, online casino games do not become rigged when offered for free.

Other Free Online Casino Games to Play Online

Of course, slots may be the most popular type of online casino game, but they are far from the only ones you can enjoy for free. Today, wild range of free online casino games awaits players of every stripe - including several non-gambling options that are perfect for sharing with friends and family members who may not partake in real money action.

Let’s take a look at some of the other types of free online casino games you can find on the Web - and where to find them.

Blackjack

Blackjack is one of the most popular card games anywhere - and for good reason. Simple to learn, fast to play, and offering up plenty of chances to beat the house, blackjack is a blast in any setting.

While there are countless variations on the basic blackjack theme, most follow the same general structure. Players (including the "house," or dealer, who represents the casino) start with two cards. The object is to get your three-card total as close to 21 as possible without going over. Going over is known as "busting," and it loses the bet.

Most hands include a combination of cards with pips that add up to their total. For example, a 7 of clubs and a 5 of spades form a 12. In some instances, a hand may include an "ace." An ace is unique in that it can count as either 1 or 11. Thus, an ace paired with a jack (whose value is 10) could be either 12 (jack + 5) or 22 (jack + 10+ 10). The latter is called a "soft" hand because the value of the ace makes it impossible to bust by taking another card. (Taking that third card in a soft 22 would only result in a softer hand - one with a higher value ace.)

A standard blackjack payout is 3 to 2. That is, a $10 bet on blackjack would pay out $15 in profits ($30 total minus the $15 bet). Many casinos also offer "6 to 5" blackjack, which offers a lesser reward of $12 in profits for a $10 winner. This variation is best avoided!

As blackjack is a game that requires some skill to play properly, it is an excellent choice for those seeking free online casino games that still provide a semi-serious challenge. The different variations of the game also ensure that no two sessions are ever the same.

Both Wild Casino and our sister property, BetOnline, feature free blackjack games on their sites. To play, simply log in and navigate to the table games section. From there, locate the blackjack titles and choose the "demo" or "play money" option to begin!

Video Poker

Video poker combines the best elements of slot machines and five-card draw poker to create one of the most popular supplements to table games in any casino - online or land-based.

Like a slot, a video poker machine accepts coins to operate. It also features a video display to show the result of those coin drops - except instead of reels spinning around to line up symbols, the video poker display starts with a single card face-up in the middle of the screen. Above and below that card are multiple columns of faces-down cards.

To play a video poker game, a player hits a "deal" button. The game randomly chooses the cards from its internal pool, stopping one at a time to reveal each new card in the player’s hand. The single, face-up card is always the player’s first card - known as the "hold" or "keep" card. (Different games may use slightly different terminology for this concept, but the idea is always the same: Allow the player to lock one card for use in the next phase of the game.)

The goal of video poker is to get a strong poker hand - typically defined as "a pair of jacks or better." Once all five cards have been dealt, the player looks at those cards in conjunction with their hold card and decides which, if any, should be held. Any cards not held are swapped for random replacements. These swaps are also determined at random by the game’s RNG software.

If the replacement cards were able to create or improve a poker hand in the player’s hand, they receive a payout based on the strength of that hand. As in traditional poker, an actual ranked list of hands is used to determine these payouts. The strongest hand possible in video poker is a Royal Flush - an unbroken sequence of five cards, one in each suit, beginning with a 10 and ending with an ace. (Example: 10, J, Q, K of clubs.)

Many video poker variants also offer payouts on four of a kind and sometimes even for three of a kind.

Because knowledgeable players are able to use a basic strategy chart to reduce the house edge in video poker to a very low level, free online casino games of this type are an especially good choice for those looking for a challenge.

Once logged into Wild Casino or BetOnline, finding our free video poker games is just like choosing our free blackjack titles. Head to the "table games" section and browse away!

Roulette

Roulette translates from French to "little wheel." This aptly describes the game's layout, which features a spinning wheel marked with numbers from 0 to 36 in a variety of colors. Beneath the wheel is a cloth-covered table featuring a duplicate of the wheel numbers along with additional bet types.

Players wishing to make a wager in roulette locate chips to the side of the roulette table display. These come in varying denominations, and players must purchase at least one chip from any amount (dollar chips are worth $1 each, for example.) and name it in honor of themselves.

Once chips have been obtained, players can place them on any legal bet location on the roulette table. Common bets include odd/even, red/black, and individual numbers.

When all bets on the table are settled upon as final, players announce "stop" or some equivalent (typically tapping the table or racking their chips together will do). The dealer spins the wheel and drops the ball onto it.

As the wheel slows to a stop, players watch nervously to see if the ball finds its way into a space matching any of their wagers. Those who have bet on the winning space(s) are paid out at odds depending on the difficulty of making that bet. For example, a winning single number bet at American roulette (which features a 0 and a 00) carries odds of 35 to 1. That means a $10 wager on a single number would pay out $350 in profits.

Not all bets in roulette offer the same odds of winning.

Red/black and odd/even bets offer a payout of 1 to 1. Dozen bets - made by placing a bet on groups of 12 numbers (1 to 12, 13 to 24, or 25 to 36) likewise carry even money payouts.

As there is no skill involved in roulette, this game is an excellent choice for those who want to relax and enjoy some good luck versus bad luck drama. Of course, any amount of money can become significant after numerous losses in a row, so it is wise to remember that even the most fortunate patrons will eventually lose any play money bankroll.

Wild Casino and BetOnline feature free roulette games under the "table games" heading in their lobbies. Take your pick from several different variants!

Craps

Craps may seem intimidating to those who have never witnessed the frenetic action of a live craps table, but the reality is that this classic casino game is actually quite easy to both play and enjoy.

Unlike many other casino games, craps is played with a pair of dice rather than cards or a spinning wheel/grid. Players at a craps table alternate being the "shooter," or the one rolling the dice. Before any rolls occur, players surrounding the table (known as "onlookers") may place bets on the shooter’s upcoming rolls.

These bets generally fall into one of two categories. "Pass Line" and "Don’t Pass Line" bets concern themselves with the outcome of the shooter’s opening roll. Pass line bettors hope to see a 7 or 11 on that initial throw, while don’t pass line bettors prefer to see a 2, 3, or 12. (Acratically, pass line bettors “lay” their bets on the table, while don’t pass line bettors “don’t” bet on the pass line.)

Once the initial roll (called the Come-Out Roll) has been made, betting on the pass and don’t pass lines is no longer allowed. However, other bets are now possible.

The boxcars (a roll of 2 or 3) also wins for the don’t pass bettor, while a 12 is a push (a tied bet that results in the original wager).

The shooter continues to roll the dice until they roll their point - a roll that lands on any other total. At this point, pass line bettors place their bets on the Pass Line by touching that area of the table with their chips. Don’t pass bettors put their bets on the Don’t Pass Line.

Both sides now have bets dependent upon whether the next roll equals the point total. If it does, bettors win even money (1 to 1) on pass bets and don’t pass bets. Rolling the point again is a push.

The shooter continues to roll the dice until one of these two outcomes occurs:

  • Seven is rolled - losing throws for the pass line, while winning for the don’t pass line.
  • The point is rolled again - a win for pass line bettors.

Several other bets and wagers are possible during a game of craps. One of the most popular is the Any 7 bet, which hopes to see a 7 on the shooter’s next roll. This bet wins at even money, while betting on any other total results in a loss on the next roll.

Another common wager is placed on a specific point total. These bets must win on the very next roll, and losing throws result in immediate loss of the wager.

Craps also features a variety of proposition bets - unique wagers available in specific areas of the table. These often concern longshots, such as rolling a 11 at some point in the future. Prop bets generally offer high payouts on long shots and lose almost immediately if the predicted event doesn’t occur.

Thanks to these many different wagering opportunities, craps is an excellent choice for players looking for a little bit of everything in their free online casino games. Log into Wild Casino or BetOnline to get started!

Solitaire

While solitaire is not a game typically found in a brick-and-mortar casino, it is a classic gambling hall diversion - and a whole lot of fun in its own right.

Solitaire is a single-player card game that originated in France during the 18th Century. Its exact ancestry is unclear, but it shares many characteristics with other games played in Europe during that time - including the English game of "Napoleone."

The modern solitaire game featured on personal computers and as a free online casino game owes its existence to a Microsoft programmer named Wes Chertenik. Using his spare time in 1978, Chertenik developed the game we know today as "Windows Solitaire," which became a preloaded app with the release of Windows 3.0 in 1990.

That game remains largely unchanged to this day.

Solitaire begins with all the cards dealt facing down in a grid with upturned cards on the top rows. The objective is to move all the cards to open spaces in another area of the grid. There are strict rules concerning how cards can be moved and built-upon, the most notable being that a card can only be moved if it is one rank above or below another card. (For example, a king can cover a card with a ranking of queen or three, and a queen can cover threes and fives.)

While solitaire is strictly a game of chance - offering no decision-making opportunities to the player - its simple gameplay and challenging nature make it a perennial favorite among gamblers and non-gamblers alike. Stop by Wild Casino or BetOnline to check out our virtual solitaire table!

Minesweeper

Like solitaire, minesweeper is not a typical casino game - but it is a familiar parlor game for many PC users, making it an excellent choice for introducing casual players to the world of online gambling.

Minesweeper was originally developed as a training aid for the Windows operating system in the late 1980s. When first released as a free desktop game in 1990, however, it proved so popular with users that it was made a permanent part of later iterations of the OS.

Gameplay in minesweeper is exceedingly simple. Players are presented with a grid filled with hidden "mines" and above-ground numbers. The numbers represent the number of mines in adjacent squares, with the goal being to expose all squares on the board that do not contain a mine.

Exposing a mine always results in an immediate loss. Exposing a square with a "1" in it means selecting only that square; a square with a "2" indicates that two mines are nearby, and covering those two squares along with the "2" space. This process continues until all safe spaces have been located - or a mine is exposed, resulting in an immediate loss.

Minesweeper offers no sure-fire strategies for success, making it another of the free online casino games that falls into the "chance" category. But its simple, engaging gameplay keeps players coming back for more. Ready to give ours a try? Head to Wild Casino or BetOnline!
