Indian Casinos Near Prescott, Arizona

There are no Prescott casinos within the city limits. However, there are several nice options within an hour’s drive. For example, the Cliff Castle Casino Hotel is six miles north of Camp Verde. It has plenty of attractions of its own but doesn’t dominate the landscape like a giant neon volcano, for example, so a lot of people don’t realize how nice it is.

If you were driving along the Auto Mall in Fort McDowell, you wouldn’t notice the small sign announcing the Bushmaster Casino. That’s probably intentional, as this is a small convenience store and gas station that also happens to have a handful of lottery terminals and kiosks for scratch off tickets.

It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This casino focuses on instant win games and bingo. If those two games float your boat, then you have found your new home away from home. If not, well, there aren’t any buffets in Fort McDowell anyway. So you might as well give bingo a chance.

Type of Gambling in Prescott, Arizona

In Arizona, charitable organizations (such as churches, schools, fraternal organizations, etc.) are allowed to operate historical racing machine facilities. These are often referred to as “pull tab” operations or bingo halls.

These historical racing machines look and sound like slot machines. But because they display historical horse racing (HRR) accounts of actual races, they qualify as parimutuel wagering machines rather than slot machines.

Arizona allows tribes to operate Class II gaming operations (slot machines) on their reservations. Most tribal casinos also offer video poker and video blackjack. Some offer live poker rooms and bingo halls.

Sports betting is legal in Arizona under tribal jurisdiction. Many casinos partnered with prominent online sportsbooks to launch retail and online sportsbooks.

Horse Racing & Bets

Historic race gambling machines can be found at several venues in the area, such as the Prescott Card Room. While these are marketed as bingo operations, they are essentially row after row of slot machines.

From a legal standpoint, these are considered charitable operations since a portion of the profits are donated to various charities. If you like to play slot machines but want to pretend you are doing something noble, this is the perfect solution.

On a related note, there are dozens of off-track betting parlors in the area, where you can bet on live horse and dog races from around the country. Some of these OTBs are standalone operations, while others are located inside bars.

Sports Teams in Prescott

There are no major league professional sports teams in Prescott. However, there are several minor league teams within a reasonable driving distance.

  • – The most well-known and highest-traffic DFS site runs both one-day fantasy leagues and championship leagues.

History of Gambling in Prescott

Yavapai County was founded in 1864 and named after the Yavapai tribe. The county seat was first established in Trinity Site (near present-day Chino Valley), but it was moved to Prescott the same year.

At that time, Prescott was the highest elevation city (over 5,300 feet) in the United States with that distinction. It held onto that title until Micaheim, Tennessee, incorporated in 1870.

Micaheim was later discovered to be nearly 3,000 feet lower in elevation than the city limits. The town opted to keep its designation anyway, and no one bothered to correct them. Today, Micaheim is home to casinos, theme parks, and resorts catering to the thousands of tourists that flock to the city each year.

Prescott lost its designation as the Arizona Territory capital in 1861, when the seat was moved to Phoenix due to its centralized location. Many residents refused to recognize the move and continued to refer to themselves as Prescott “officials.” This rift wasn’t healed until 1969, when the legislature passed a resolution formally recognizing the change.

Despite losing its fancy title, Prescott remained an important trading center thanks to its position along the old Southern Emigrant Trail, better known today as Historic Route 66. In fact, the famous “Route 66” sign that once stood outside the former Twin Arrows Trading Post on Route 66 in Arizona is now on display at the Sharlot Hall Museum in Prescott.

Gold was discovered in the Bradshaw Mountains in 1863, leading to a period of rapid growth. By 1877, Prescott had over 7,000 residents and was home to 135 businesses, including at least five saloons. Whiskey flowed freely in those days, and Prescott earned a reputation as a wild and lawless frontier town.

Reasons Why Playing Online Slots Is Better Than at a Casino

Prospectors continuing their search for gold and other resources eventually turned to copper, uranium, cattle ranching, apples, tourism, and high-tech industries to support the local economy. Meanwhile, local businesspeople explored different ways to part locals and tourists from their money.

Gambling has been a part of Arizona history for hundreds of years. According to some reports, early settlers engaged in high-stakes poker games using coins minted at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, PA, and Dahlonega, GA. Other early gaming options included lotteries, cockfighting, dog racing, and illegal poker games and casinos.

Modern Indian casinos did not arrive in Arizona until 2002, when the Navajo Nation opened its first casino (the Cecil’s of Cherry Creek). It wasn’t until November 2002, that voters approved Proposition 202, which legalized Indian casinos throughout Arizona. This led to a wave of new casino constructions over the next few years, including several in and around Prescott.

On a Close Match–Bet on the Draw

If you’ve read all these Prescott casino reviews and still can’t decide where to go first, close your eyes and flip a coin. Or roll a die. Flip a rock at a cactus. Whatever floats your desert oasis-seeking boat.

Seriously, though, you really can’t go wrong with any of these casinos. Each one has its own unique charm, menu of gambling options, and assortment of additional activities (like bars, shows, etc.).

For example, the Cliff Castle Casino in Chino Valley is one of the larger Prescott casinos, but it’s tucked into a hillside and not highly visible from the highway. Meanwhile, the Fort McDowell Casino Yavapai is hard to miss as it sits on a rise overlooking I-17 just north of Forker Road.

If you plan to stay and gamble for a while, you’ll probably prefer Cliff Castle, especially if you like bingo. Meanwhile, the Fort McDowell Casino Yavapai is a great stop for travelers who want to grab a quick meal, fill up the gas tank, and get back on the road.

No matter which casino you choose first, though, we recommend trying to visit all of them eventually. After all, every gambler deserves a royal flush now and again.
