When William Penn founded the Pennsylvania Colony in 1682, he extended a peaceful gesture to the locals by challenging any of his men to lift a hand against them. Soon after, the Quaker leader signed a treaty with the Lenape tribe that recognized their sovereignty over millions of acres – from the Delaware River on the east to the Ohio River on the west.
