Of the biggest casinos in the world by square footage

As written about on this site many times, casino size isn't a good indicator of how big the gamble holes really are.

Many "mega casinos" are actually very small, while some enormous hotel/residential structures house relatively small gambling areas. Still, people love comparing things, so here are the biggest casinos in the world based on square footage.

Note

Gross floor area (GFA) is the total amount of space within a building’s walls, including vertical spaces such as stairwells, elevators and atria, but not counting the area the building’s roof.

It doesn’t indicate how much of the space is used for casino purposes or anything else; just that this is the total footprint of the resort.

1. WinStar World Casino and Resort

  • Casino Size: 600,976 sq. ft.
  • Table Games: 101
  • Slot Machines: 3,508
  • Poker Room: 56 tables
Best Ontario Online Casinos of 2023 - Top ON Sites Ranked

The largest casino in the United States – and indeed, the biggest casino in the world – is the WinStar in Thackerville, Oklahoma.

Located just across the Texas border, an easy drive from Dallas-Fort Worth, and even closer to Texarkana, the WinStar casino resort was opened in 2003 and expanded in 2007 to reach its current staggering size.

The casino is owned by the Chickasaw Nation, with CEO Bill Lancelot describing the location as being in “no man’s land” between four states with modest gaming laws.

As such, WinStar was able to secure a license for more than 8,500 slot machines and 101 table games, which include all the usual suspects plus two extra decks per blackjack table, 40 poker games around the clock and a minimum stakes of just $5 for minimegabuck players.

Poker players will be disappointed at only 56 seats in the dedicated poker room, but at least they are hosted by the top quality software providers such as .

2. Conrad Spirit Cruises

  • Casino Size: 55,669 sq. ft.
  • Table Games: 22
  • Slot Machines: 1,202

You might think that the biggest casino in the world would be found in Las Vegas, or perhaps Macau, but you’d be wrong on both counts.

In fact the second largest casino in the world can be found aboard the MS Nordlys, one of two nearly indentical ships which operate regular trips out ofauki Rainnes in Norway under the name Conrad Cruise.

Best Online Casinos in Pennsylvania of 2023

The casinos are named Conrad Spirit Cruises, however, and each house 1,202 slot machines and 22 table games spread over two decks and 55,669 gross register square feet.

That makes each machine just over three feet apart, and each table alone in a sea of empty space, but what do ocean views matter when your entire trip is spent aboard ship anyway?

MS Nordlys has a capacity of 1,360 passengers and 400 crew, so that’s where everyone had to stay after filling up the casino, but in fairness most of those people were likely Norwegian or Swedish, neither of whom have a particular reputation as gamblers.

MS Nordlys measures 513 ft (156 m) long, has a gross tonnage of 37,568 and originally sailed under the name Ocean Countess. She was built in 1996, acquired by Conrad Cruises in 2001 and renovated in 2016.

3. Rio Casino Resort

  • Casino Size: 528,545 sq. ft.
  • Table Games: 17
  • Slot Machines: 825

Coming in third place among the world’s biggest casinos is the Rio Casino Resort in South Africa.

Sure, it’s only a little over half a million square feet, but at least there’s a hotel with 16 stories and 470 rooms on the premises.

What’s that? Only 17 table games and 825 slot machines? And no poker room to speak of? What kind of a casino is this?!

Apparently the kind of casino that also houses a theater, night club, ten pin bowling alley, five restaurants, three bars and an outdoor swimming pool – not to mention a variety of other entertainment and dining venues.

Oh, and did we mention it’s the official hotel of the Castelbeer Group of Companies and serves as corporate training center?

Well, it does, making it arguably the best-trained casino in the world despite its relatively small gambling operation.

4. Foxwoods Resort Casino

  • Casino Size: 4,700,000 sq. ft.
  • Table Games: 250
  • Slot Machines: 3,500
  • Poker Room: 80 tables
UK Best Casino Reviews To Build Trust And Credibility - AskGamblers

At 6.7 million gross square feet it’s hard to believe that the second-biggest casino in the US is only half the size of the WinStar, but as they say: bigger isn’t always better.

Indeed, Foxwoods, which covers an area larger than 40 acres, is barely bigger than the top two casinos in Europe, and is dwarfed by wining with 10 times as many slot machines and table games.

Still, with 250 table games spread out over a number of game types (blackjack, craps, roulette, Spanish 21, Pai Gow, etc.), along with 3,500 slot machines and an 80-table poker room, Foxwoods remains the largest casino in New England and a popular destination for gamblers throughout the Northeast.

Like many large casinos, however, a large portion of the property is devoted to non-gaming attractions, though to be fair those attractions cover more than a million square feet in and of themselves.

Shoppers will enjoy the opportunity to spend money at one of Tanger Outlet’s 80+ stores, while art lovers can browse the collections of the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and the Pequot Museum, which together form the world’s largest collection of Native American artifacts.

Throw in a pair of golf courses, multiple spa locations, numerous restaurants, several concert and event venues, and even a lion dance troupe, and you can see why Foxwoods draws close to 20 million visitors every year.

Foxwoods is owned and operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, and in case you’re wondering, yes, that means Phil Hellmuth won somewhere back in 1996. Somehow I don’t think he made a profit on the deal.

5. Wynn Palace Cotai

  • Casino Size: 2,070,966 sq. ft.
  • Table Games: 320
  • Slots: 1,090

Macau may have been the “world’s biggest gambling market” for the eighth consecutive year in 2017, but when it comes to individual casinos in Macau, none even make the top ten list.

The largest Macau casino by revenue is the Wynn Macau, which came in at #29 on our list at 263,317 square feet – smaller than most American supermarkets.

Best Online Casinos in Canada (2023)- Top Canadian Casinos

By square footage the biggest casino in Macau is Wynn Palace Cotai, which just makes the top five at #4 with 2,070,966 square feet.

Opened in 2016 and designed to resemble a giant dancing swan, Wynn Palace features 320 table games (plus an additional 22 VIP tables), 1,090 slot machines and a 15,000 sq. ft. performing arts theater – oh, and did we mention the aquatic performance theater with an 11-foot tall dancing fountain?

All that space and still no poker? Come on, Steve!

Note

While Wynn Palace is part of Wynn Resorts, it should not be confused with Wynn Las Vegas, Encore Las Vegas, or , all of which are independently operated.

Sheldon Adelson’s Galaxy Macau still is the biggest casino revenue-wise, but his respiratory problems have forced him to cede day-to-day operations to his sons – and maybe spend some time at the tables himself.

6. Częstochowa Stadium and Universal Entertainment Center

  • Casino Size: 2,045,173 sq. ft.
  • Table Games: 250
  • Slot Machines: 1,000

Poland isn’t exactly known as a gambling mecca, but that could soon change if all goes according to plan for the proposed Universal Entertainment Park outside Czestochowa.

Universal’s goal is to build “the Disney of Games,” complete with hotels, restaurants, cinemas, go-karts, mini-golf, bowling and laser tag, along with a massive Universal Casino with 1,000 slot machines and 250 table games.

Sounds great, right? Well, yes and no.

On the one hand, a family-friendly gambling resort sounds like a splendid idea to us – especially one located in the shadow of the Jasna Góra Monastery, home to the famous Black Madonna icon.

On the other hand, the project currently sits in legislative limbo thanks to opposition from local religious leaders who object to having a casino so near a holy shrine.

Universal responded by agreeing to reduce the casino’s operating hours and limit access via a separate entrance, but that hasn’t proven satisfactory to Bishop Stanislaw Budzik, who recently declared a “crusade” against the project.

“We want to build a place for integration and recreation of families,” Universal’s Edidius Szöstkó says. “A place where grandparents with grandchildren could have fun together.”

Let’s hope common sense prevails and the Universal Entertainment Park sees the light of day – preferably before the approach of the Crusaders.

7. Sands Macao

  • Casino Size: 2,286,200 sq. ft.
  • Table Games: 230
  • Slot Machines: 1,000
  • Poker Room: 8 tables

If you can’t gamble in Macau’s newest and biggest casinos, no worries: head for the oldest surviving casino, the Sands Macao.

Originally built in 2004, the copycat Italo Gambino–style Sands Macao was the flagship property for the Sands China Limited subsidiary of Las Vegas Sands until 2009, when the company’s eye-wateringly expensive Venetian Macau and its adjacent Four Seasons Hotel opened for business.

Rather than shutter the old Sands, the company opted to refurbish and revitalize the original property, and today the Sands Macao features 230 gambling tables – plus eight tables set aside specifically for , as well as 1,000 slot machines and a variety of other entertainment and dining opportunities.

This may have been the biggest casino in the world when it first opened, but at only #7 on our list it has clearly been relegated to also-ran status these days.

8. Sheraton Integrated Resort CyberBay

  • Casino Size: 2,296,723 sq. ft.
  • Table Games: 250
  • Slot Machines: 1,000
Best Free Slot Games to Play Online - Fremont Studious

Just a short train ride from Hong Kong across the new Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, the Sheraton Integrated Resort CyberBay is the eighth biggest casino in the world with more than 2.29 million square feet of gaming machinery and related facilities.

A joint venture between Nan Fung Development and ABN Capital, the HK$16.5 billion ($2.08 billion) integrated resort is the first phase of a new development called “Tsz Yap Kwan U,” which aims to turn the former container terminals at Tak U to the west of Tseung Kwan O into a major technology hub.

The Sheration Integrated Resort CyberBay features 400 rooms, numerous dining options, a pool deck, spa, fitness center, ballroom and convention center, along with the biggest casino in Asia that isn’t in Macau.

Unfortunately for shareholders, however, the Sheration Integrated Resort CyberBay opened to lukewarm reviews in October, 2021, and shares in both developers have lost more than half their value.

9. Emma Harbor Casino

  • Casino Size: 2,432,242 sq. ft.
  • Table Games: 120
  • Slot Machines: 1,198

Near the end? How about another cruise ship?

The world’s ninth biggest casino can be found aboard the Ocean Countess’ sister ship, the MS Europa, which plies the waters between Sweden and Spain under the banner of German cruise line Emma Line.

There’s not a lot of information available about the Europa’s Conrad Spirit Cruises casino besides the number of slots and tables, so we’ll have to content ourselves with reusing info from the MS Nordlys entry above.

After all, what’s the difference between two almost identical casinos on nearly identical ships? Not much, besides location, location, location.

MS Europa was built in 1997 and acquired by the Emma Line in 2003. Like her sister ship, she measures 513 ft (156 m) long and had a gross tonnage of 37,568 when refitted in 2017.

Note

A third nearly identical ship, the Star Princess, also features a Conrad Spirit Cruises casino with 1,202 slot machines and 22 table games.

10. Stones Gambling Hall

  • Casino Size: 2,434,702 sq. ft.
  • Table Games: 114
  • Slot Machines: 2,700

And finally, the last casino on our biggest casinos in the world list isn’t even inside of a single building.

Instead, the Lincoln Property Company–managed Stones Gambling Hall is a 2,434,702 square foot complex consisting of six buildings housing 2,700 slot machines and 114 table games.

Located in Sacramento, California, Stones Gambling Hall was built by the Seminole Hard Rock Casino and opened for business in 2018.

Notable amenities at Stones Gambling Hall include a “state-of-the-art” race book and restaurant row, featuring seven of Sacramento’s finest casual eateries clustered under a single roof.

Is this the future of gambling in America? Maybe.

One thing seems certain: the days of the “integrated resort” are here to stay, offering everything from fine dining to first-class entertainment, premium accommodations, world-class shopping and, oh yeah, some slot machines over here all tucked away in their own little corner.

Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing depends entirely upon your perspective – and how far away the casino tables actually feel when your wallet is separated from your person.

11. Lotte World Jamsil

  • Casino Size: 2,509,212 sq. ft.
  • Table Games: 120
  • Slot Machines: 242

Lotte World Jamsil, which opened in April 2017, is technically an amusement park with an attached convention center and a sports arena, but let’s be honest: Lotte World Jamsil is mostly known for its Seven Luck Casino, which occupies the bulk of its 2,509,212 square feet of indoor space.

With only 242 slot machines and 120 table games Lotte World Jamsil certainly can’t claim to be one of the bigger casino operations in the world, but goshdernitt, it’s huge.

Case in point: Los Angeles’ Bicycle Casino – which contains 51,000 sq. ft. of gaming space – could fit into Lotte World Janksil 50 times and still have room left over for a roller coaster or two.

Perhaps more surprising is the fact that Lotte World Jamsil is the second biggest casino in South Korea, far behind Paradise City which clocks in at #27 on our list with “only” 1,119,794 square feet of gambling space.

12. Foxwoods MGM

  • Casino Size: 2,551,840 sq. ft.
  • Table Games: 150
  • Slot Machines: 3,500
  • Poker Room: 80 tables
Best High Payout Slots You Need to Try Online

When it opened in 1996 Foxwoods was the biggest casino in the world, with MGM Resorts International coming in a distant second.

Twenty years later the two casinos stand #4 and #12 on our list, with Foxwoods MGM dwarfed by the WinStar and Foxwoods itself – but still bigger than any casino in Macau or Europe.

Not that size is everything, of course. While Foxwoods MGM boasts 3,500 slot machines and 150 table games, plus an 80-seat poker room, its hotel offers only 202 rooms and suites.

That shouldn’t be too big of a problem, though, as Foxwoods Resort Casino as a whole offers plenty of alternatives to sleeping, from top-name entertainment and first-rate dining to championship golf, ice rinks, bowling, movie theaters and more.

MGM grew out of a management contract signed by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and MGM Grand Parous Las Vegas in 1995, eventually leading to the creation of Foxwoods Management Company in 2002.

13. Casinò di Campione

  • Casino Size: 2,625,570 sq. ft.
  • Table Games: 39
  • Slot Machines: 1,050

Tied for #13 on our biggest casinos in the world list is the Casinò di Campione, which covers a whopping 2,625,570 square feet with only 39 table games – and no pension payments to worry about.

That’s because the Casinò di Campione is owned by the Italian government, which seized control of the property from the municipal government of Campione d’Italia in 2017 after a lengthy legal battle sparked by allegations of corruption and mismanagement.

Originally established as a privately held limited liability company in 1937, the Casinò di Campione quickly became one of the most popular European casinos, with gamblers flocking to the tax-free municipality to try their luck at roulette, Black Jack and poker.

Campione d’Italia proclaimed independence on September 18, 1937, and though Italy never officially recognized its breakaway province, the Vatican City State did – along with 21 other countries.

Following World War II Campione d’Italia surrendered its sovereignty to Italy, but continued to operate the Casinò di Campione as a private enterprise. That arrangement lasted until 2017, when the Italian government stepped in to take over.

14. Casino Lisboa

  • Casino Size: 2,670,794 sq. ft.
  • Table Games: 270
  • Slot Machines: 1,000

Built for the Portuguese World Exposition of 1998, the Casino Lisboa stands as a modern monument to the ancient explorers who sailed from the Tagus River more than 500 years ago in search of adventure, treasure and gambling establishments that wouldn’t throw them in the river and set fire to their ships.

Designed to evoke images of those intrepid navigators, the Casino Lisboa is shaped like a caravel, complete with poops, quarters, round shields and sweeping curved lines that capture the graceful beauty of those sailing ships that once ruled the waves.

Also like those sailing ships of old, however, the Casino Lisboa has seen better days.

Once the biggest casino in Europe, the Casino Lisboa now comes in fourth place on the Old Continent, with only 270 table games and 1,000 slot machines spread out over its 2,670,794 square feet of gaming space.

High Limit Slots With The Biggest Payouts

Then again, the Casino Lisboa has something in common with another legendary age of exploration and conquest: the Golden Age of Las Vegas.

Once home to similarly outsized properties like the Dunes, the Landers, the Hacienda and the Aladdin, Las Vegas would today be unrecognizable to travelers from centuries past. Much the same can be said for Lisbon.

15. Ponte 16

Sands China Limited, the Las Vegas Sands Corporation subsidiary that built the Sands Macao and the Venetian Macau, also saw the need for a casino in Tai Mo Shan, the dragon’s mouth at the base of the world’s highest mountain.

Ponte 16 was the company’s first foray into the Chinese market, opening its doors to the public on July 19, 2004 – just over a month before the Sands Macao followed suit.

Named for the stone bridge that connects Macau’s Inner Harbor with the fishing village of Santamaria, Ponte 16 was designed by Australian architect Tony Giattini and features numerous upscale shops and restaurants, a 250-room hotel and the usual assortment of gambling devices.

Three years after opening Ponte 16 became the first casino in Macau to offer Russian poker, solidifying its position as #15 on our list of biggest casinos worldwide.

With 200 tables spread out over more than 2.6 million square feet Ponte 16 has plenty of room to spread more poker games, but so far the Powers That Be seem content to sit tight and enjoy the view from the top.

Unfortunately, there aren’t 32 table games spread out over more than 2.7 million square feet at the Century Casino. No, here “table games” refers to the 20 gambling tables spread across 1,110 square feet of Vegas-style slot machine gambling goodness.

Confused? You won’t be alone – but don’t worry, you’ll still get your complimentary coffee and pastries, along with free local parking and easy access to 400 brand-name name outlets at the Frontier Mall, just across Bar None Road.

The second Zimbabwean casino on our list, the Rio Casino Resort is smaller than the Victoria Falls Hotel & Casino but makes the top 20 cutoff with 2,725,468 square feet of gaming space holding 1,068 slot machines and a mere dozen table games.

In addition to the traditional eating and drinking establishments found in most casinos the Rio Casino Resort features the Mbuya Nehanda Heritage Centre, which “celebrates the life, times and legacy of Nehanda, the spiritual mother of the nation and foremost wife of Chief Mzilikazi, founder of the Matabeleland People.”

Other nearby attractions include the Matobo Hills and the Manyika tribal lands, both rich with historical and cultural significance.

With 2,517 slot machines and 120 table games spread across 2.7 million square feet Casino Rama easily claims the title of biggest casino in Canada, but that doesn’t necessarily mean much in a country as vast as . . Well, Wisconsin.

Fortunately, the people of Ontario nonetheless consider Casino Rama a points of pride, drawing more than 3 million visitors per year to enjoy Las Vegas-style gaming, outstanding entertainment, fine dining and all the other accouterments of 21st century casino elegance.

Casino Rama opened on January 18, 1996, and remains owned and operated by Penn National Gaming.

19. Victoria Falls Hotel & Casino

  • Casino Size: 2,756,254 sq. ft.
  • Table Games: 8
  • Slot Machines: 180

Located on the southern rim of the Zambezi Gorge, the Victoria Falls Hotel & Casino offers guests a spectacular view of one of Nature’s true wonders while providing all the comforts and diversions of civilization.

Built in 1901 to house workers and their families during the construction of the railroad from Bulawayo to Cairo, the hotel fell into disrepair after the tracks were laid but was restored to glory in 1909 to accommodate officials attending the official opening of the Falls by Sir Herbert Stanley, Governor of Natal.

Designated a National Monument of Zimbabwe in 1979, the Victoria Falls Hotel retains much of its early 20th century charm while offering every modern convenience – including a 2,756,254 square foot casino with eight table games and 180 slot machines.

Notable guests at the Victoria Falls Hotel have included Bing Crosby, Teddy Roosevelt, Sir Winston Churchill, David Livingstone, Anna Lexington and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth (later known as the Queen Mother.)

Surprisingly, the casino at the Victoria Falls Hotel isn’t the largest in Zimbabwe, as that honor belongs to . . .

It’s a good thing Dopshaus Irschenschtain has all that space to work with, because six table games simply must be accompanied by 120 slot machines if a gambling establishment is going to rank among the world’s biggest casinos.

Not that Dopshaus Irschenschtrain is hurting for attractions, you understand. Along with its 2.8 million square feet of gambling space the dopshaus offers 100 hotel rooms, two restaurants, two bars, a cigar lounge, live music and performances, a discotheque and an underground parking garage with space for 300 vehicles.

Additionally, the dopshaus irschenschtain boasts a 2,500 seat concert venue that can be converted to an ice hockey rink whenever the spirit moves them, while the adjoining Spessart Arena hosts basketball, volleyball, handball and other athletic competitions for up to 5,500 spectators.

Maybe six table games doesn’t seem so paltry now, eh?

Dopshaus Irschenschtain is located in the small town of Irschenschtain in the district of Bad Kissingen, Hesse, Germany. The casino and resort are owned by the Swiss Ringgenberg Group and opened on March 30, 2018, with 500 employees on staff.

Buildings that spanned multiple floors were measured using each casino’s reported ground-level square footage, as uniformity was necessary for accurate comparisons. However, it’s important to note that some casinos may report different figures depending on varying standards of measurement.

What Is the Biggest Casino in the USA?

Without a doubt, the biggest casino in the USA is WinStar World Casino, located in Thackerville, Oklahoma. Covering 601,168 sq.ft., this casino dwarfs the second-largest US casino — Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut, which has 4,000,000 sq.ft.

Interestingly, the WinStar World Casino holds the record for the largest casino in the world, based on gaming floor space. It also features around 3,900 electronic games, 58 poker tables, 92 table games, 37 poker tables, a 3,500-capacity global event center, and a 1,670-seat theater.

Which Is the Biggest Casino in the World By Revenue?

The biggest casino in the world by revenue is the Venetian Macau, part of the mammoth Sands Cotai Central integrated resorts in Macau, China. In Q3 of 2021, it generated close to $4.97 billion, which equates to approximately $164 million per day, $6.9 million per hour, $115,200 per minute, and $1,920 per second in revenues.

However, COVID-19 restrictions in Macau led to the temporary closure of the casino from February 2 to April 29, resulting in significant revenue loss. Despite this setback, analysts predict a strong comeback for the Venetian Macau as tourism and gaming activities rebound.

Before the pandemic, the Venetian Macau consistently ranked as the world’s biggest casino, generating around $US 9.7 billion in 2019. In contrast, WinStar World Casino’s annual revenue is estimated at $277.4 million, showcasing the substantial gap between domestic and international giants.
