The Best Casinos in Pittsburgh PA—PA East’s Finest

There are four casinos in Pennsylvania’s second-biggest city, and they are all clustered around the southern and southeastern sides of the downtown area, making them conveniently accessible from I-376 and US-22/30.

As you can see from the map below, they are all within two miles of each other.

#1 – The Meadows Racetrack & Casino – Best Casino in Pittsburgh

  • Name: The Meadows Racetrack & Casino
  • Street Address: 210 Racetrack Road, Washington, PA 15301
  • Postal Code: 15301
  • Phone Number: (724) 228-3750
  • Established: 1995
  • Casino Size: 500,000 sq.ft.
  • Game Type: Slot machines, table games, live racing, online casino and sportsbook
  • Notable Attractions: Simulcast races, fantastic food outlets, relaxing spa, stylish hotel, free parking

Known locally as “the M” to differentiate it from similar venues elsewhere in the state, The Meadows Racetrack & Casino is the biggest employer in Washington, Pennsylvania. It draws crowds from nearby Pittsburgh and across southwestern Pennsylvania.

With more than 3,500 slot machines and 50 table games spread across two separate gaming plazas, including an off-track betting parlor known as M Rewards Club, it’s easy to see why.

I visited the “Fantasy Springhill Suites” attached to the casino last summer and was immediately struck by how clean and modern the place was.

The lobby was buzzing with people playing slot machines dotted around the walls. Other guests were checking in or out while directional signs pointed to the elevators.

I headed upstairs to my room on the fourth floor and was further impressed by the bright, airy décor and the array of high-quality amenities, including a mini fridge, coffee maker, flatscreen TV, large bathroom with walk-in shower, and king-size bed so comfortable that I had trouble tearing myself away the following morning.

However, tear myself away, I did. Breakfast was included in the room rate, which was excellent value considering the standard of the food and the efficiency of the waitstaff.

After filling up on eggs benedict, fresh fruit salad, and strong coffee, I headed back down to earth and made my way to the casino via the glass walkway that connects the hotel to the gaming floor.

The first thing I noticed about the casino was how spotless it was. Cleaners were going about their business diligently, vacuuming carpets and polishing slot machines as patrons played their favorite games.

The management at WP Gaming, which owns the Meadows Casino and Racetrack, has invested heavily in making the place welcoming and attractive to visitors. And it shows.

I spotted brand-new slots I’d never seen before next to old favorites like Wheel of Fortune and Buffalo. There was no shortage of blackjack, roulette, and poker tables staffed by courteous dealers.

A slick lounge area with comfortable chairs and low coffee tables offered electronic versions of roulette, blackjack, and baccarat. High-rollers can access an exclusive VIP lounge with even loftier gaming limits.

Sports fans can place bets on their favorite teams at one of five betting kiosks before finding a seat at the sports bar to watch the action unfold on several massive HDTVs.

Similarly, horse racing fans have several ways to get their fix at The Meadows. You can place a wager at one of six betting cars ringed around the racetrack or use one of eight self-service betting kiosks.

You can also watch the action on the track unfold from various vantage points or enjoy simulcast racing from tracks across the country sited in front of giant projection screens.

I spent a couple of hours pulling the lever on one-armed bandits with names like Dragon Spin, China Shores, and Jade Wins before swapping slot heaven for the restaurant heaven known as Tango.

It was a busy Saturday lunchtime, and numerous families with young children were enjoying the buffet while chirpy waitstaff glided between tables, refilling glasses and clearing empty plates.

The dessert section looked particularly inviting, but I still had work to do. Resisting the siren call of bread pudding, chocolate fountain, and cherry cheesecake, I paid my bill and headed back to the casino floor.

This time, I took a seat at a blackjack table and proceeded to lose the few dollars I’d set aside for table games. By the time I reached 21 and claimed my winnings, I was ready to call it a day.

Stopping at the Players Club to verify my tier status and confirm my rewards balance, I was pleased to see that I had qualified for some free play. That would come in handy on the casino’s linked network of progressive jackpots.

Before heading back to the hotel, I stopped at the gift shop to buy some postcards and a Meadows T-shirt for a friend. Prices were very reasonable, and the staff member behind the counter was incredibly helpful when I couldn’t decide which note cards to purchase.

By the time I got back to the room, I was shattered. After unpacking a few things, I decided to order room service. Thirty minutes later, a smartly presented young man delivered a delicious steak dinner that I enjoyed while watching ESPN on the TV.

Sated and satisfied, I washed the dishes and climbed into bed, eager to get a good night’s sleep ahead of another action-packed day exploring the best western PA casinos.

Looking back on my trip, there is little, if anything, I would change or do differently. The only slight negative was the intensity of the background music in the restaurant and casino.

It’s a personal preference, and many people might appreciate the upbeat soundtrack provided by the in-house musicians. Ultimately, I think The Meadows deserves its place among the best casinos in PA west of the turnpike.

Rivers Casino & Resort Pittsburgh is one of four casinos owned and operated by Churchill Downs Incorporated within the state. It sits on a 90-acre site along the Ohio River waterfront and boasts spectacular views of the Pittsburgh skyline.

Inside, you’ll find more than 1,000 slot machines, 50+ table games, and a dedicated poker room hosting cash games, tournaments, and series throughout the year.

You can also bet on your favorite sports at one of seven betting kiosks before settling down to watch the action unfold on several giant HDTVs in the sports bar.

I visited Rivers Casino & Resort Pittsburgh in August 2022 to see what all the fuss was about. The first thing that struck me as I drove toward the venue along Casino Drive was the impressive scale of the building and the thousands of reflective solar panels covering the roof.

I parked my car in ample car park and made my way inside the casino via a covered walkway. It began to rain as I approached the entrance, and I was glad I’d thought to bring an umbrella with me.

Once inside, I was greeted by a smartly dressed security guard who asked to see my ID. He waved me through once he was happy I wasn’t an underage roulette player attempting to sneak past undetected.

The casino was fairly quiet during my afternoon visit, which gave me plenty of time to explore the gaming floor and speak to some of the patrons playing the slots. Everyone I spoke to was friendly and approachable, taking the time to answer my questions about the casino and the games they enjoy playing.

The overall impression I got from Rivers Casino & Resort Pittsburgh was one of quality. Everything was spotlessly clean, from the carpets to the slot machines and tables. Security seemed tight but not oppressive, and the staff members I met were polite and professional.

The decor is minimalist yet effective, with muted colors and tasteful artwork creating a relaxed atmosphere conducive to winning and losing money.

Slots fans are particularly well catered for at Rivers Casino & Resort Pittsburgh. As well as several hundred classic slot machines, the casino houses a row of cutting-edge hybrids called ETGs (Electronic Table Games).

ETGs allow you to play blackjack, roulette, craps, and baccarat using buttons and touchscreens instead of physical chips and tables. They are great fun and give chip-counters and other advantage players something to think about.

An airy atrium separates the bank of ETGs from the traditional tables run by smart dealers employed by the casino. There are tables spread across several different game types, including Ultimate Texas Hold’em, Mini and Midi Baccarat, Blackjack, Roulette, Craps, and Spanish 21.

The minimum bets vary depending on the type of game and how many players are seated at the table. However, there are plenty of tables with $5 minimums for most games between noon and 8.00 pm. Between 8.00 pm and 4.00 am, the minimums double, which suggests the casino caters mainly to evening players.

I spoke to a guy playing blackjack who said he prefers ETGs because he doesn’t have to tip the dealer. He went on to explain that the payouts are the same across the board, regardless of whether you play with chips or bills.

I moved over to the poker room to find half a dozen tables spread around a central podium housing the dealer and a banker’s cage filled with green chips.

There were around a dozen players grinding at the tables when I arrived, with four or five more registering with the floater. The floater carries a cardboard box of chips to tables that reach maximum occupancy, i.e., five or six players.

Most of the games running when I visited was No-Limit Hold’em, though there was a single table running Pot-Limit Omaha. Minimum buys started at $30 for the lower stacks and $500 for the highest. Blinds on the highest stack were $30/$60 when I was there.

There is a Pennsylvania poker series running at Rivers Casino & Resort Pittsburgh relatively frequently throughout the year. Series usually comprise multiple events played over the course of a week or long weekend.

Final table winners are guaranteed a min-cash and a share of a prize pool bolstered by a $1,000 seat in in Montreal, Canada. Satellite tournaments running in the days leading up to the main event give budding champions a chance to win a seat at the lowest buy-in level.

If you prefer watching poker on TV to playing it, Rivers Casino & Resort Pittsburgh has you covered. The casino features several HDTVs showing poker tours from around the world or recording of chat shows and daytime television if there’s nothing you fancy watching.

Best NE Online Casinos & Gambling Sites. Try 6 Popular Games

Before leaving the poker room, I spoke to the floater about comps and how they work. She explained that everyone who registers at a poker table receives the same number of comps per hour, irrespective of how much they are winning or losing.

Comps at Rivers Casino & Resort Pittsburgh are based on the amount of time you spend playing rather than your net loss, as is customary in European casinos. Nevertheless, players get a choice of comps, including free play, restaurant dollars, and discounts on parking and valet services.

I left the poker room and decided to grab a bite to eat at one of the many bars and eateries inside the casino. There are several fast-food outlets selling hot dogs, pretzels, popcorn, and other snacks.

If those options aren’t appealing, try the river FARE, which serves stone-fired pizzas, salads, sandwiches, and other lighter fare. For a more indulgent dining experience, head to the upscale eleventh hour pub for delicious comfort food and craft beer.

Live music plays several nights a week at the casino, so check the schedule and time your visit to catch a local band rocking out in the atrium.

If you’ve had enough excitement for one day, take the concourse level to the resort spa for a range of rejuvenating treatments designed to ease away stress and tension. Alternatively, hit the gym for a workout or book a hair appointment at the salon.

No review of the would be complete without commenting on its cleanliness and overall appearance. In my opinion, the casino looks great. The décor is modern and sophisticated, and everything is spotlessly clean.

From the plush carpets to the shiny slot machines and the smartly dressed security guards, everything exudes class and sophistication. I didn’t witness anyone being aggressive or disruptive during my visit, and the security team dealt promptly and professionally with the one drunk I saw being led out of the casino by a friend.

My only criticism of the casino is the smoking area. All the tables and slots are in the non-smoking area, and smokers must step outside to light up a cigarette. It seems odd to me that the casino doesn’t have a section with smoking tables like almost every other gaming venue in Pennsylvania.

Anyway, that’s a minor quibble. Overall, I loved The Innovation Center and look forward to returning soon.

#4 – Meadows Racetrack & Casino Beaver Springs

  • Name: Meadows Racetrack & Casino Beaver Springs
  • Street Address: 5750 Beaver Springs Dr, Beaver Spring, PA 15202
  • Postal Code: 15202
  • Phone Number: (877) 330-5072
  • Established: 2019
  • Casino Size: 250,000 sq.ft.
  • Game Type: Slot machines, table games, online casino and sportsbook
  • Notable Attractions: Simulcast races, scrumptious grub, free parking

The Meadows Racetrack & Casino Beaver Springs opened its doors to the public in June 2019. Located off Exit 77 of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, it provides east-west commuters with a convenient stopoff en route to and from their destinations.

Like its sister property in Washington, Pennsylvania, the Meadows Beaver Springs welcomes visitors from throughout the region with hundreds of slot machines and table games presided over by courteous dealers.

There’s also a lounge area for players that want to try electronic roulette and baccarat. Horse racing fans are catered for with live racing at the track plus simulcasts screened across numerous HDTVs.

When you need to refuel after all that spinning and dealing, the café-style restaurant serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. Alternatively, take a seat on the terrace and enjoy a cold drink while watching the world go by.

#5 – The Westmoreland Mall

  • Name: The Westmoreland Mall
  • Street Address: 1200 Broadway Ave, Greensburg, PA 15601
  • Postal Code: 15601
  • Phone Number: (724) 834-1300
  • Established: 1976
  • Casino Size: 380,000 sq.ft.
  • Game Type: Slot machines, table games, online casino and sportsbook
  • Notable Attractions: Brilliant dining, pleasant shopping, free parking

Technically, The Westmoreland Mall is a shopping center rather than a casino. But it does house around 450 of the greatest slot machines you’ll find anywhere in Pennsylvania.

There are also several roulette, blackjack, and poker tables overseen by charming dealers employed by Mount Airy Casino. So, in my book, The Westmoreland qualifies as a casino.

Mount Airy opened its Greensboro extension in 2017 and employs around 200 people to manage the gaming floor and ensure everyone has a fantastic time.

I spoke to one of the managers during my visit and was surprised to learn that The Westmoreland is far more than a bolt-on casino added to an established shopping complex. Instead, the mall was purpose-built with a casino on the bottom two floors and retail stores and restaurants on the upper levels.

According to the manager, the casino is connected to the rest of the mall by a BREEAM rating of “Very Good,” making it one of only three Retail-Led Regeneration projects in North America to achieve the certification.

He went on to highlight that, as well as being kind to the environment, The Westmoreland offers a seamless integration between gaming and retail spaces, creating an entertaining and exciting day or night out in Western Pennsylvania.

I looked around the casino to see if I could see what he meant. On the surface, it appears to be like countless other casinos around Pennsylvania with rows upon rows of flashing slot machines.

But as the manager suggested, there is something special about The Westmoreland that sets it apart from the competition. Perhaps it’s the high ceilings and abundance of natural light; perhaps it’s the sound system pumping out chart hits from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

Whatever it is, the casino has a buzzing energy that attracts players seeking a fun and engaging gambling experience in addition to the chance to win some money.

Salena Godden is a lucky lady. The Mount Airy executive vice president oversees day-to-day operations at The Westmoreland. With more than 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry under her belt, she knows what it takes to keep players coming back for more.

Under her stewardship, The Westmoreland has become one of the leading gaming venues in Pennsylvania west of the turnpike. If you’ve never been, I strongly suggest you pay Ms. Godden and her team a visit.

#6 – The Parkway Centre

  • Name: The Parkway Centre
  • Street Address: 5100 Corporate Dr, Monroeville, PA 15146
  • Postal Code: 15146
  • Phone Number: (412) 374-3600
  • Established: 2008
  • Casino Size: 70,000 sq.ft.
  • Game Type: Table games, online casino and sportsbook
  • Notable Attractions: Close proximity to airports, free parking

The Parkway Centre is unique among casinos in Pennsylvania west of the turnpike because it doesn’t have a casino license. Instead, it employs croupiers to run popular table games like blackjack, roulette, and mini-baccarat.

Things to avoid betting or playing certain games, including slot machines. Anyone found to be betting on an outlawed game faces a fine of up to $500 and up to 90 days in jail.

So, why would Westmoreland County permit table games but not slots? According to , it dates back to an incident in 2008 when the district attorney secured a search warrant and confiscated around 60 slot-like machines from the Parkway Centre.

The owner, Bridgeville Bingo, argued that the machines weren’t illegal gambling devices but game machines used to teach its staff how to serve customers correctly. The Judge agreed and returned the machines to the centre, where they operated alongside traditional table games until 2010.

That’s when the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board passed legislation requiring table games permits costing $10,000. Many operators chose to switch to slots and risked prosecution. But the owners of the Parkway Centre opted to pay up and preserve the mixed gaming format.

As the article notes, the arrangement means the county sheriff assigns a deputy to patrol the gaming floor, ensuring no slip-ups occur. It all sounds a little draconian to me, especially when you consider that the Parkway Centre is perfectly legal and compliant with all state and federal laws.

Be that as it may, the centre continues to operate a popular selection of table games, including blackjack, mini-baccarat, and electronic roulette. There are around 250 stations spread around the gaming floor, along with a lounge area serving food and drinks to hungry and thirsty players.

Hours of operation are 8.00 am to 2.00 am Monday to Thursday and 24 hours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Tina Comery, the general manager at the Parkway Centre, told me that around 10 dealers are employed on a typical weekday. That number increases to around 25 on busier nights when more people are available to play roulette, blackjack, and baccarat.

The games follow the usual rules and use chips that can be exchanged for currency at your chosen rate. Adjacent to each table is a bank of electronic roulette stations where you can place bets and have them taken by the same dealers employed on the table games.

Ms. Comery mentioned that players tend to earn more comps playing the electronic roulettes due to the faster pace of play. However, lots of people prefer interacting with the dealers and other players at the tables. So, a good balance exists across both areas of the gaming floor.

WSOP Circuit Results - WSOP Circuit Ring Winners & Payouts

While the Parkway Centre is not a conventional casino, it is a welcoming and inclusive space where anyone aged 21+ can enjoy a range of table games. If you’ve ever wanted to give roulette or blackjack a try, I highly recommend you visit the Monroeville gaming venue.

Philly Oddities: The Xcite Center and Valley Forge Casino Resort

  • Name: The Xcite Center
  • Street Address: 100 East Cathedral Street, Coatesville, PA 19320
  • Postal Code: 19320
  • Phone Number: (610) 466-8700
  • Established: 2018
  • Casino Size: 35,000 sq.ft.
  • Game Type: Slot machines, table games, poker, online casino and sportsbook
  • Notable Attractions: Delicious bites, decent gaming, free parking

The Xcite Center is a small casino housed inside the historic Roundhouse at Brandywine in Coatesville, Chester County. It opened its doors to the public in October 2018 and packs around 500 slot machines and 20 table games across two floors.

Unfortunately, there is no pizza place or café on the premises; nevertheless, visitors are allowed to bring their own food and drink onto the gaming floor. There are also several restaurants and bars adjacent to the casino if you prefer to eat and drink onsite.

As the name suggests, the casino aims to provide an exhilarating gaming experience for locals and visitors alike. The venue is open seven days a week, closing its doors at 4.00 am every night.

of the Best Free Slot Machine Games Online

Here’s a quick snapshot of the games available at the Xcite Center:

  • 20 live table games (blackjack, craps, roulette, and Spanish 21)
  • 174 slot machines
  • 158 video gaming terminals (VGTs)
  • 14 electronic roulette stations
  • 10 live poker tables

The poker room opens at noon and closes at 8.00 pm Sunday to Thursday and stays open until 2.00 am on Fridays, Saturdays, and holidays. Tournaments run regularly throughout the week, and players compete for cash prizes in Hold’em and Omaha formats.

You can buy into satellites starting at $60 for a chance to win a seat in bigger tournaments costing $360 or $630. The Xcite Center also hosts occasional freerolls with cash prizes for the top three players.

The casino does not offer a hotel, so most players living more than a short drive away will choose to stay at a nearby resort or inn. Here are some suggestions:

  • Extended Stay America – Glenwood
  • Fairfield Inn
  • Clarion Hotel & Conference Center Coatesville Area

Extended Stay America is my preferred option since it feels like a home-from-home thanks to the kitchenettes in every room. Of course, you can always order room service or eat out; the choice is yours.

  • Name: Valley Forge Casino Resort
  • Street Address: 1160 First Avenue, King of Prussia, PA 19406

  • Casino Size: 510,000 sq.ft.

The Valley Forge Casino Resort is the flagship venue in the Penn National Gaming family. As such, it benefits from a generous rewards program that gives you points you can exchange for cash, free play, and gifts when you play slots and table games.

Join the Choice Club to start earning comps on your wagers. There are several membership tier levels providing enhanced benefits to high rollers and regular visitors.
