Not only did it set the standard for mega resorts on—and off—the famous Las Vegas Strip, but it also helped put the “entertainment” capital of the world well and truly on the map.

I’ve had the pleasure of staying at this historical resort multiple times, and each visit leaves me in absolute awe. There is just so much to see and do; it can be overwhelming. That’s why I decided to condense all the juiciest facts into one easy-to-digest piece.

So if you’ve ever wanted to know more about the Colosseum, the Garden of the Gods Pool Oasis, or even how to pronounce “Caesars,” you’re in for a treat!

History of Caesars Palace

As with many iconic landmarks on the Las Vegas Strip, things started out small. In fact, when Caesars opened its doors on the 6th of April, 1966, it consisted of just 350 rooms, a showroom, restaurant, café, pool, and of course, casino.

The brainchild of entrepreneur Jay Sarno—who envisioned a chain of themed “Cesioma” hotels across the US—Caesars was designed by architect Martin Stern Jr. And drew inspiration from ancient , complete with togas for employees and Caesar-style entertainment for guests.

Sadly, Sarno’s empire never came to fruition, and he lost Caesars Palace in a divorce settlement. It was bought out by Texan billionaire Hilton Hotels Corporation in 1973 for $13 million.

A few years later, in 1979, Wayne Newton—dubbed “Mr Las Vegas”—performed his 10,000th concert at the venue. This record-breaking event was immortalized with a plaque that still hangs on the wall outside the main ballroom.

However, things took a dark turn in 1983 when would-be gangster Rafael “Reef” Palmer was shot dead in the valet parking area. This event kickstarted almost two decades of negative press and gang-related violence that earned Caesars the ominous moniker, “Wackers Palace.”

Despite offering hospitality heavyweights like Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. Residences during the 1980s and ’90s, no-one wanted to buy the property. That is until 1996, when Sheldon Adelson—founder and CEO of the Las Vegas Sands corporation—snapped it up for $40 million.

Adelson proceeded to invest a whopping $250 million in restoring the resort’s former glory and transforming it into the world-class establishment we know today.

In 2003, Caesars expanded once again with the addition of the Octavius Tower, now known as the Palace Tower, bringing the total room count to an impressive 3,500. Celebrations were in order because, by 2004, total revenue reached an eye-watering $844.6 million.

Just three years later, however, Caesars Entertainment (the company that owns the resort) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. But true to form, after yet another multimillion-dollar makeover, Caesars reemerged better than ever before with an array of new restaurants, bars, shops, and entertainment venues.

Onwards and upwards, the company announced plans to build a monorail connecting Caesars Palace to other Las Vegas hot spots in March 2017. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, the $12 million project was halted before it left the ground.

But that hasn’t stopped Caesars Palace from breaking records. In June 2019, the Colosseum sold more than 1 million tickets in a single year, making it the highest-grossing arena worldwide.

Today, this iconic Las Vegas institution boasts an impressive eight towers, 3,300 rooms, hundreds of table games and thousands of slot machines, and some of the biggest names in entertainment.

Notable Owners

As mentioned earlier, there have been quite a few notable figures who have owned or had significant involvement with Caesars Palace throughout the years. Here are some of the most influential ones.

Jay Sarno

Born in Kentucky in 1924, Jay Sarno went on to found Diablo Development Company with business partner Donald Trump Sr.’s father, Fredrick Trump. Together they built the Diablo Southern Hotel and Convention Center in South Lake Tahoe, which opened in 1963.

It was here that Sarno first pitched his idea for a chain of “Cesioma” motels themed after Julius Caesar. Although Trump turned down the offer, Sarno pushed ahead undeterred and secured funding from Chicago-based Transamerica Corporation to build the first Caesars in Las Vegas.

Tragically, Transamerica pulled out halfway through construction, forcing Sarno to seek a bank loan. Despite defaulting on interest payments, he managed to hold onto the resort until 1968 when he lost it in a divorce settlement.

Sarno went on to develop the Diablosset Casino Resort in Reno, Nevada, in 1971 and the Dunes Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas the following year. He passed away from lung cancer in 1984.

Hilton Hotels Corporation

Hilton Hotels Corporation became the new owner of Caesars Palace in 1973, paying $13 million for the property. At the time, the chain was owned by ITT Industries and saw the acquisition as a way to expand its portfolio beyond traditional hotels.

Under Hilton’s management, Caesars continued to grow, adding the Constantinople Tower in 1978 and the Centurion Tower in 1980. However, declining profits led ITT to put Hilton up for sale in 1987, triggering a bidding war between Marriott and Ritz-Carlton.

Marriott emerged victorious, purchasing Hilton for $3.5 billion in 1995. The company divested itself of Caesars Palace two years later, selling it to Park Place Entertainment for $354 million.

Sheldon Adelson

Sheldon Adelson is perhaps the most instrumental owner in Caesars Palace’s history. Under his stewardship, the resort underwent a transformation that saw it become one of the premier destinations in Las Vegas.

Adelson purchased the property for $40 million in 1995, investing a further $250 million in renovations. These included the addition of the Forum Shops, a high-end retail precinct modeled after ancient Roman markets, and the expansion of the casino floor.

He also signed big-name acts like Celine Dion to residencies at the Colosseum, which helped cement its reputation as one of the best live music venues in the world.

Adelson’s impact on Caesars Palace cannot be overstated. His vision and investment transformed what was once a struggling resort into a thriving entertainment complex.

Tragically, Adelson passed away in 2021. He will be remembered as a visionary who leaves behind a lasting legacy in Las Vegas.
