We here at MGM Springfield love movies almost as much as we love gaming. So, in honor of the 95th Academy Awards – or Oscars® to you and me – we’ve come up with a list of some of our favorite big-screen dramas about rolling dice, hitting the slots, and going after the big score.
Many of these films are among the best gambling movies ever made while others… well, they’re still classics in our eyes! Ready to wager on a top contender? Let’s shuffle up and deal!
The Color of Money (1986)
Speak to pretty much anyone and they’ll tell you that The Hustler is the best movie about billiards and gambling ever made. Truth be told, we’d find it hard to argue otherwise but we’re running a close second here so we might as well well.
Starring Paul Newman and Tom Cruise, this sequel to the 1961 classic focuses on “Fast Eddie” Forlornato (Newman) as he tries to teach a young pool player named Vincent (Cruise) everything he knows in order to earn prize money at a series of ninth ball events. Of course, things don’t go quite according to plan.
Fun fact: Both The Hustler and The Color of Money were adapted from a series of novels by Walter Tevis.
The Sting (1973)
This Pulitzer Prize-winning screenplay follows a pair of seasoned grifters named Henry “Shaw” Gondorff (Paul Newman) and Johnny “Kelly” Hooker (Robert Redford) as they seek revenge against a ruthless mobster named Doyle Lennon (Robert Earl Jones). In order to do so, they decide to run a long con known as “The Big Sting” or “The Italian Italian Job.”
Featuring a great supporting cast that includes Charles Durning, Ray Walston, Harold Gould, John Margolis, Eileen Brennan, Richard Dysart, and Julius J. Epstein, The Sting would win seven Oscars® including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay.
Fun fact: This was the highest-grossing film of all time until Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope claimed the crown in 1977. Adjusted for inflation, The Sting would rank 42nd as of 2022.
Croupier (1998)
After training at the National Film and Television School in London, Clive Owen broke into Hollywood with leading roles in Cookie’s Fortune, Chancer, and this low-budget British thriller. Interestingly enough, this would prove to be the most successful of the lot.
Written and directed by Paul Andrew Williams, Croupier follows Jack Manfred (Owen), an unsuccessful author who begins working as a dealer at a high-stakes casino in order to raise money for a new book and woo his ex-girlfriend Marion Nell ( Kate Hardie ). However, things take a dark turn when he meets a American gambler named Kristina (Gina McKee).
Did you know? Before casting Clive Owen, director Paul Andrew Williams considered Alfie Boe, Richard Armitage, James Purefoy, and Sean Pertwee for the lead role.
Fun Facts About BetMGM Casino - MGM's Online Gambling ServiceRounders (1998)
This neo-noir crime drama stars Matt Damon and Gretchen Mol as a pair of card players and old flames named Mike McDermott and Suzie Maxwell. After losing all of his friends’ money to a corrupt sleaze bag named Ted Knox (Michael Imperioli), Mike is forced to participate in a series of high-stakes games in order to pay off his debts.
Co-starring Famke Janssen, Edward Norton, Martin Landau, John Turturro, John Malkovich, and James Whittaker, Rounders would receive mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. Unfortunately, it didn’t make back its $16 million budget at the box office.
Interesting fact: According to co-writer Brian Koppleman, a proposed TV spinoff featuring Michael Cera as a younger version of Mike McDermott never got off the ground because Damon wanted creative control.
Ocean’s Eleven (2001)
Though not as iconic as the 1960 original, this big-screen reboot boasts an incredible ensemble cast that includes George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Andy García, Bernie Mac, Elliot Gould, and Julia Roberts. Set in modern-day Las Vegas, the movie finds Danny Ocean (Clooney) assembling a team of expert thieves in order to rob three Casinos simultaneously.
Fun fact: Not only did this serve as Steven Soderbergh’s first PG-13 film, it also marked the feature film debut of oceanographer-turned-actor Carl Reiner's son Rob Reiner.

Maverick (1994)
Based on a short-lived television series of the same name, this comedy-adventure follows Bret Maverick (James Garner), a card sharps who is both charming and dishonest. After winning a seat on a transcontinental train race called “The Golden Steam Navvy Limited,” he must compete against a group of dangerous opponents including Marshal Zane Cooper (James Coburn), “Le Grand” Fromentin (Gerard Depardieu), and Conrad Benson (Alan Rickman).
In addition to garnering mostly positive reviews from critics, this movie would earn an Oscar® for Best Sound. Oh yes… and a sequel starring Mel Gibson.
Did you know? Though Richard Dreyfuss was initially slated to play Bret, the producers eventually decided to cast James Garner instead.
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)
Considered one of Guy Ritchie’s best films by many enthusiasts, this black comedy crime caper follows a group of hustlers named Eddie, Tom, Soap, and Bacon who agree to work for gangster Harry Lonsdale in order to pay off a £500,00 debt. Naturally, things don’t work out quite as planned.
Featuring an amazing soundtrack filled with tunes by The Shipmates, Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix, and Longleg Gary, this movie would mark Jason Statham’s big screen debut. It also gave us Snatch , so there’s that too.
Fun fact: Aside from Statham, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels features breakout performances by Dexter Fletcher, Nick Nevern, Jason Flemyng, Vinnie Jones, and Bradley Wynn.
California Split (1974)
Co-written and directed by Robert Altman, this film follows two gamblers named Bill Denny (Robert Altman lookalike Elliott Gould) and Charlie O’Connell (Schlosser Schmeling alter ego Donald Sutherland) as they rack up huge wins at the poker table and the racetrack. However, their friendship starts to fall apart after Charlie quits doing drugs.
Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival before hitting theaters in America, this flick would receive positive reviews from critics but failed to resonate with audiences. That being said, it has since been recognized as a cult classic.
Fun fact: In addition to Sutherland and Gould, California Split also stars Marcia Nichols, Aurora Clutton, Jane Misery Montgomery, Barrie Youngfan, and Geoffrey Lewis.
Casinos That Offer a No Deposit Bonus in 2023The Gambler (1974)
Adapted from a 1970 TV movie and a 1971 made-for-TV movie of the same name, this dark comedy-drama stars James Caan as a college professor with a serious gambling problem. Kavanagh Q.C. (1971)
Though it wasn’t the first made-for-TV movie, this legal drama is widely regarded as a pioneering effort in the made-for-TV movie genre. Starring Keith Michell, Ronald Pickup, Anthony Valentine, and Joan Plowright, it follows barrister Terence Kavanagh as he struggles to clear his friend Michael O’Neil (Pickup) of murder.
Fun fact: Like many early made-for-TV movies, Kavanagh Q.C. was initially shown in theaters in the United Kingdom before airing on ABC.
Deal (2008)
Borgata Poker Open champion Greg Raymer portrays self-made millionaire Duncan Ford in this based-on-a-true-story dramedy. When his wife asks for a divorce, Ford starts competing in high-stakes Texas Hold ‘Em tournaments in order to regain her affection.
Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Meagan Good, Cynthia Stevenson, Shannon Elizabeth, Adam Garcia, Kenneth Mitchell, and Jeff Garlin, Deal would receive mixed reviews from critics but was a hit with moviegoers. Unfortunately, it failed to inspire a sequel titled Double Down which was reworked into a Lifetime Movie Network original titled Double Down: Revenge of the Dealers.
Interesting fact: According to IMDB, Greg Raymer received $100,000 for his role in Deal . He donated every penny to charity.
Miss Meadows (2013)
It’s hard to think of a better actress than Katie Holmes for the role of a seemingly meek schoolteacher with a secret passion for sniping rifle. Of course, there’s more to Miss Meadows than she lets on. As it turns out, she only kills “bad people”. Who amongst us hasn’t had that urge now and again?
Co-starring James Badge Dale, Eric Keenleyside, and Jonathan Malen, this movie would be panned by most critics. Still, we can’t help enjoying it.
Fun fact: Katie Holmes met her now-husband Jamie Foxx on the set of this film.
21 (2008)
This movie is based on the non-fiction book Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions by Ben Mezrich. It tells the tale of a group of students from M.I.T. who use their math skills to win big at Blackjack.
Directed by Robert Luketic and featuring an international cast that includes Kate Bosworth, Jim Sturgis, Kevin Spacey, Laurence Fishburne, Liza Lapira, and Jacob Pitts, 21 earned mixed reviews from critics but did alright at the box office.
Did you know? Like the characters in this movie, author Ben Mezrich earned a fortune using card counting techniques while he was a student at M.I.T.
Molly’s Game (2017)
Molly Bloom is perhaps best known for operating an exclusive underground poker game that attracted the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Ben Affleck, Matthew Broderick, Nick Cassavetes, Phil Hellmuth, Tony Award winner Ben Affleck, and the owner of the Dallas Mavericks. Of course, things went awry once the FBI got involved.
This biographical crime drama is based on Bloom’s memoir of the same name and was brought to life by Aaron Sorkin, who also served as his own directorial debut. It stars Jessica Chastain as Molly, Idris Elba as FBI Agent Brimstone, Michael Cera as actor Todd Wagner, and Joe Keery as Peter Brandt.
Fun fact: Although it received mixed reviews from critics, Molly’s Game holds a 77% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes . Additionally, it was nominated for Best Screenplay at the 90th Academy Awards®.
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (2008)
Though it doesn’t take place in a casino per se, this romantic comedy does revolve around gambling. In fact, Frank Spencer runs up such massive debts that he owes everyone in town – including the mortegage man and the tax collector.
Featuring excellent performances by Frances McDormand, Amy Adams, Lee Pace, Ciarán Hinds, and a host of wonderful character actors, this movie was praised by critics and audiences alike. It currently holds an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
By the way, the story takes place in 1939 London. At the time, gambling was illegal in Britain except on certain races at licensed courses. However, there were no such courses in London at the time.
The Color of Money (1986)
Eight years after The Hustler, Paul Newman and writer-director Robert Rossen reteamed for this sequel about Fast Eddie Felson. No longer the hotshot player he once was, Eddie makes a living running pool hustles with his latest protege, Victor “The Kid” Lazlo (Tom Cruise).
Though it didn’t do quite as well critically or commercially as The Hustler, The Color of Money would earn eight Oscar® nominations including Best Supporting Actor for Cruise, Best Supporting Actress for Mary Alan Hokuta, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects. In the end, it took home two golden statues for Art Direction and Costume Design.
Fun fact: This was the last movie that Paul Newman and Jennifer Todhunter (his real-life wife and costume designer) would work on together before starting the Newman’s Own line of food products.
Rain Man (1988)
Though auto body shop owner Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) and his savant brother Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) couldn’t be more different, they both share a love of gambling. In fact, Charlie is $80,000 in debt to some very bad people.
After learning that their father has left his entire fortune to Raymond, Charlie convinces his brother to travel across America with him under the pretense of visiting some of Ray’s favorite places. Needless to say, things get complicated.
Co-starring Valeria Golino and Michael D Pollard, this movie would receive overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. It earned eight Oscar® nominations, including Best Actor for both Cruise and Hoffman.
Fun fact: Though Barney Rosenzweig was originally slated to produce Rain Man , Barry Levinson took over the position when Robert Towne came on board as screenwriter.

Fun fact: Though this movie launched the acting career of young Mel Gibson, his scenes would have gone to Jodie Foster if the studio had gotten its way.
The Cincinnati Kid (1965)
Set in New Orleans in 1935, this movie follows Steve Brodie (Steve McQueen), a rising star in the world of gin. Nicknamed “The Cincinnati Kid” for his brash attitude and aggressive playing style, he challenges longtime champion Marc Horman (Edward G. Robinson) to a game that could make him a rich man.
Still, there’s more to life than cards, as Ian McCall (annoyingly dubbed “The Man”) learns through his relationship with Eric Paillon (Tuesday Weld). Co-starring Karen Sharpe, Ann Wedgeworth, and Janet Leigh, The Cincinnati Kid would be praised by most critics.
Fun fact: This was Tuesday Weld’s big screen debut. She would later appear in Pretty Poison , also filmed in 1968.
Eight Men Out (1988)
Based on Eliot Asinow’s non-fiction book Eight Men Out: The Black Sox Masacre and the Baseball Cover-Up That Shocked the Nation , this period drama chronicles the infamous 1919 Chicago White Sox scandal.
As the story goes, several members of the Chicago White Sox accepted bribes from gamblers in exchange for throwing the World Series. They pleaded innocent but were ultimately found guilty and banned from baseball for life.

Desperate for cash, he starts winning big at online poker site EmpireAltris.com. However, things aren’t what they seem.
When the authorities start closing in, Richie flies to Costa Rica to meet the site’s enigmatic founder Ivan Schwartz (Affleck). What happens next is pretty intense.
Co-starring Gemma Arterton, Anthony Michael Hall, John Heard, and Rice Gainer, Runner Runner would receive mixed reviews from critics. It currently holds a 37% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Fun fact: Though the main antagonist is referred to as Ivan Schwartz in the movie, his name is spelled Ivan Schwartz in the end credits.
The Gambler (2014)
Mark Wahlberg plays literature professor Jim Bennett, a compulsive gambler with a massive debt to the wrong people. In order to settle his tab, he agrees to teach a class on Jim Gatz (the protagonist from The Great Gatsby ).
George Clooney served as one of the producers for this movie and makes a brief cameo appearance as a Wall Street tycoon named Wes. Jessica Lange, Michael Cera, Alvin Ing, and Grady Parks round out the cast.
Co-written and directed by The West Wing ’s Andrew Klavan, this movie was panned by most critics. It currently holds a 16% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Then again, Wahlberg insists that people will enjoy it.
Fun fact: This marks the third time that a movie entitled The Gambler has been released in the last decade. Prior to this, there was a 2002 TV movie starring Sam Robards.
Miss Meadows (2013)
On the surface, Erica Meadows seems like an ordinary elementary school teacher. Dig a little deeper, however, and you’ll find that she harbors a deadly secret – she’s a highly skilled sniper who only kills “bad people.”
Katie Holmes gives a terrific performance as the titular character in this thrilling film. She is joined by James Badge Dale, Joan Allen, Ernie Hudson, Nicky Whelan, Laurence Fishburne, and Anthony Michael Hall.
Miss Meadows was panned by most critics but has developed a following among certain movie buffs. Frankly, we think it’s worth watching just to see Katie Holmes step out of her comfort zone.

21 (2008)

Directed by Robert Luketic and written by Peter Steinfeld, this movie was met with mixed reviews from critics. It currently holds a 56% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Nevertheless, 21 was a commercial success.
Fun fact: Before filming began, the cast of 21 spent weeks studying Blackjack under the guidance of professional card counter Rick Salomon.

Casino (1995)
Martin Scorsese sure loves Las Vegas. In addition to bringing us 1995’s Casino, the legendary filmmaker also gave us 1996’s The Gambler and 2002’s Catch Me If You Can .
Loosely based on Nicholas Pileggi’s non-fiction book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas , this movie explores the rise of Las Vegas casinos and the criminal empire that grew alongside them. It focuses specifically on the Mob-controlled Stardust, Fremont, Marina, Riviera, and Desert Inn resorts.
De Niro portrays Ace Rothstein, a Jewish American gambler who is recruited by the Chicago Outfit to run the day-to-day operations of the Casino at the Aquarius. Shosanna (Julia Roberts) becomes Ace’s wife despite having good reason to hate all organized crime groups.
This star-studded movie also features James Woods, Don Rickles, Frank Vinciente, Peter Savage, and John Meyers. It holds a 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes .
Fun fact: Nick Arnstein was originally intended to be played by Robert De Niro.
