The MGM Brand

MGM Resorts International is a gaming, hospitality, and entertainment giant based in Paradise (a town, not a state), Nevada. It owns and operates 30 resorts by our last count, which includes the majority of MGM casinos in the US and around 1,900 acquisitions across merchandising, movies, and more. These venues are largely concentrated along the Las Vegas Strip and in Atlantic City, with others scattered throughout the states.

For the purpose of this piece, though, we’re concerned only with the MGM casinos in the US mainland. So, we won’t be looking at properties like MGM COTAI in Macau or the recently sold MGM North Field in Qatar. We will, however, be delving into some detail about the history of the company—well, as much as we can into nearly 100 years of operation. Then, of course, we will rank the top MGM casinos in the United States. After that, we have a brief section comparing these resorts to those of MGM’s major rival, Caesars Entertainment.

A Brief History of MGM Resorts International

Contrary to popular belief, MGM Resorts International doesn’t actually own the MGM name and all its associated intellectual property. That particular honor belongs to Amazon founder and the world’s richest man, . In fact, the organization was originally founded way back in 1984, with the merging of Bally’s, Marc Resorts, and Polygram Filmed Entertainment to form Bally Entertainment Inc. This company owned around 15 casinos in various parts of the USA, many of which still bear the Bally’s name today.

In 2004, Polly Grillo Ganoung became the first ever woman to head up a publicly traded gaming company when she took over as CEO of MGM Classics LLC. This subsidiary of MGM Mirage (which would later become MGM Resorts International) was focused on the production of made-for-TV movies. Ganoung led the acquisition of Orion Pictures Corporation later that year.

We’re fast-forwarding through history here, but essentially, MGM Mirage was formed in 2004 by the merger of MGM Grand and Mandalay Residence Group. This new entity bought out Bally Technologies Inc. in 2005, assuming ownership of the Bally’s brand alongside several casinos. In 2007, the company changed its name to MGM Resorts International, dropping “Mirage” from the title. It also announced plans for the construction of CityCenter, which opened in 2009/2010.

Not long after that, the MGM Resorts chairman and chief executive officer, Jim Murren, announced a restructuring of the company. This involved spinning off the MGM logo and other intellectual property into a new company called EPIX. In turn, EPIX sold said assets to Gary Barber for $27 million, giving him license to use the lion logo and the name MGM for a period of 20 years. This explains why so many non-gaming companies have the MGM brand emblazoned on their products. From aerospace to zucchini snacks, someone at MGM has no doubt slapped their logo on it.

Current Leadership at MGM Resorts International

Gary Barber served as chair of Epix, Inc., following his purchase of the MGM branding in 2017. However, in May 2021, MGM Resorts International announced that Barber would be stepping down from Epix’s board. At the same time, Bill Hornbuckle assumed the role of president and CEO of MGM Resorts International. He had previously held the position of president and Acting CEO, starting in February 2018 after Jim Murren stepped down. Gordon Absink is the current chairman of the board, having been appointed in March 2020.

How Many MGM Casinos Are There in the US?

As things stand in early 2023, there are a total of 10 MGM branded casinos spread across the United States. Three of these gaming venues are located outside of America, in Mexico and China and operated under the “MGM Signature” banner. We mentioned earlier how MGM Resorts International owns the branding and operating rights for 20 years. This means we could see many more non-gaming and gaming-related openings in the coming decades. For now, let’s take a closer look at the MGM casino resorts in the US and see how they stack up against each other.

Ranking the Top MGM Casinos in the US

When it comes to choosing the best casinos owned by MGM Resorts International, we could focus purely on gaming revenue. Indeed, this might be a wise move if you’re an investor looking for . However, we’re primarily concerned with the overall experience here at Indivisible Gaming. As such, we consider factors such as hotel accommodations, dining options, access to entertainment, and other amenities. Of course, we also take into account the size and quality of the gaming floor, as well as the surrounding area and accessibility. With all that in mind, here are our rankings for the best MGM resorts in the USA.

1.  MGM Grand Las Vegas

!MGM Grand Las Vegas!!

It should come as no surprise that the flagship venue takes the number-one spot in our best MGM casinos list. The MGM Grand Las Vegas set the company on its way to becoming one of the biggest names in hospitality, entertaining millions since 1993. Boasting more than 6,852 rooms and over 169,000 square feet of gaming space, this resort never fails to impress.

Every inch of this casino oozes class and sophistication, with bright lights and endless entertainment drawing visitors from far and wide. The 169k square feet of gaming space houses more than 2,500 slot machines and 139 table games. You’ll find classics such as blackjack, roulette, craps, and baccarat rubbing shoulders with poker variants and hispanic bingo. If you fancy yourself as the next Phil Hellmuth, you’ll be pleased to know there are numerous hosted tournaments running daily.

The MGM Grand Las Vegas boasts a broad selection of restaurants, bars, clubs, and lounges. Among them are no fewer than nine fine dining establishments, including Emeril Lagasse’s Delmonaco Steakhouse and Michael Mina’s Rizzuto. If you get the munchies while blowing your bankroll at the tables, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Rounding out the top end of this restaurant roster, we have Wolfgang Puck’s CUT and the innovative Craftsteak by Chef Tom Colicchio.

This MGM casino resort has 20 bars and clubs dotted throughout its premises, many of which are world-renowned. The Centrifuge, for instance, is home to the famed Levitate Lounge, where patrons can enjoy handcrafted cocktails while gazing out over the Strip. If you prefer your drinks with a side of live music, you could do worse than head to TAP. This sports bar and restaurant offers more than 70 beers and a menu full of American favorites.

The MGM Grand Garden Arena is one of the primary reasons this resort is regarded as the best MGM casino. This 17,157-capacity arena has played host to countless musical legends, from Elvis Presley and Madonna to Lady Gaga and Coldplay. Several UFC events have taken place within its walls, as well as various award ceremonies and political conventions. N Natural Light’s MLB All-Star Game Gatorade Party took place there in 2014, with thousands of thirsty baseball fans in attendance.

The MGM Grand Spa & Salon provides guests with all the usual treatments and services, while the Whirlpool Bubble Hot Tub provides somewhere to relax after a hard day’s pampering. The grand pool complex features five outdoor pools, four spas, three poolside bars, and one grill serving up delicious food. The resort also boasts a fitness center, concierge service, luggage storage, wedding facilities, gift shops, and even its own post office. When you throw Wet Republic, the state-of-the-art Crown Theater, and the Topgolf Swing Suite into the mix, it’s easy to understand why the MGM Grand Las Vegas stands tall as the pick of the MGM casinos.

2. Bellagio

!Bellagio Hotel Las Vegas!!

Overlooked Spin Palace Casino Games You Need to Play

The Fountains of Bellagio are one of the most recognizable landmarks on the Las Vegas Strip. Coordinated sets of water jets shoot streams of water hundreds of feet into the air, perfectly choreographed to music. Designed by renowned artistic director Steve Wynn and built at a cost of $40 million, these fountains dance every hour from morning until midnight. Needless to say, they provide a stunning backdrop for the second-best MGM casino in America.

Boasting luxury accommodations, exquisite cuisine, first-class entertainment, and a top-notch gaming area, the Bellagio is rightly considered one of the finest hotels in Sin City. Its 3,564 rooms and suites feature luxurious bedding, flat-screen TVs, high-speed internet access, iPod docking stations, and sumptuous bathrooms. You can upgrade to a panoramic corner room with lounge access or splash out on one of the opulent suites. Whatever you choose, you can be sure of a good night’s sleep before hitting the tables.

The 116,000-square-foot casino at the Bellagio offers everything you could want from a MGM casino. It has more than 2,400 slots and video poker machines; more than 100 table games; a race and sports book with 11 huge screens; and a dedicated poker room with 52 updates chairs and 11 big-screen TVs.

If you like seafood, you’ll be pleased to learn that the Bellagio plays host to some of the best fishy restaurants in Vegas. Both Michael Mina and Julian Serrano received the prestigious Michelin star for their eponymous creations. Primarily a seafood house, Michael Mina serves up steaks, pastries, and other treats in a stylish setting. Over at Julian, the menu is dominated by cheese, both local and imported. However, you can sample meats and other dishes if you’re not a fan of fromage.

We couldn’t do a best MGM casinos rundown without mentioning Cirque du Soleil. The company has been wowing audiences for almost 30 years, during which time it has entertained more than 190 million people. Four of the best productions can be seen under the MGM Resorts International banner, with Mystere at Treasure Island and KA at the MGM Grand completing the lineup.

Other attractions at the Bellagio include the exceptional Botero sculptures, the legendary Nightclub, and the luxurious Spa & Salon. The latter offers a range of relaxing treatments performed by expert therapists, such as massages, facials, body wraps, and aromatherapy sessions. The club level and higher come with lounge access, while the pool area boasts two tropical paradises surrounded by lush gardens. Finally, the casino arcade provides classic amusements such as air hockey, crane grabbers, and shooting galleries.

3. The Mirage

!The Mirage Las Vegas!!

Although it isn’t quite as flashy as some of the newer resorts on the strip, The Mirage is a true classic. Not only did it introduce the volcano fountain feature to Vegas (previously exclusive to Tokyo), but it was also the world’s first large-scale polyglass dome structure when it opened in 1989. Developed by Steven Wynn and designed by Joel Robertson, this 3,207-room hotel cost more than $630 million to build. Today, it remains one of the most iconic MGM resorts in Nevada.

free slots games to play

The Mirage Casino features more than 750 slot machines, 70 table games, and a sportsbook run by CG Technology. You’ll find all the usual suspects on the felt, alongside pai gow, four card poker, and three card poker. If you want to try your luck with the little reels and lever, The Mirage has everything from classic fruit machines to the latest 3D video slots. The Race and Sports Book offers comfortable seats, massive screens, and self-betting terminals. Additionally, there’s a high-limit room with personal flat-screen TVs and incredible views of the Strip.

You don’t have to be a guest at The Mirage to enjoy its facilities. The spa, salon, pool, and fitness center are all available to walk-ins, as are most of the restaurants. We recommend booking a treatment at the spa in advance, though, as this 4,000-square foot facility often gets very busy indeed. The seductive sounds of the waterfall provide a perfect backdrop for massages, facials, body wraps, polish, and waxing sessions.

If you’ve got kids with you, they’ll love the Volcano and Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat. The former is a free attraction that runs every evening, with music, fire, and special effects. The latter costs money to enter but allows you to get up close with white tigers, white lions, and bottlenose dolphins.

There are eight eateries at The Mirage, catering to most tastes and budgets. Andiamo Italian Steakhouse serves classic Italian-American fare, complete with fresh seafood, prime steaks, and a comprehensive wine list. Veteran comedian Gallagher famously smashed watermelons here back in the day, but you’re safer now. Pantry is an upscale deli, Pantry Noodle Bar offers Chinese, Japanese, and Thai dishes, and Kafe Kreme does coffee, pastries, sandwiches, and ice cream milkshakes.

KJ Dim Sum + Bar serves small plates of Chinese cuisine, Samba Lavazine and Liquor House serves Brazilian coffee and cocktails respectively, and Michel Richard’s Center Strip Cafe closed in 2020. Finally, we have the Main Dining Room, which serves breakfast buffet-style but transitions to carvery style meals later in the day.

4.  Mandalay Bay

!Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino!!

Like the Excalibur and Luxor, the Mandalay Bay was designed to represent an Egyptian temple. However, whereas those two resorts go for an Old World vibe, this one has more of a modern feel. Opened in 1999, it is the southernmost of the MGM Grand hotels on the Strip. Connecting it to the rest of the complex is the city-spanning walkway known as the Las Vegas Monorail. This elevated track circles above Koval Lane and the Industrial Road before heading back toward the Tropicana.

With more than 3,209 rooms and suites, the Mandalay Bay offers plenty of places to rest your head. If you want to wake up overlooking the action-packed casino floor, book a city view room. Alternatively, you can face a artificial beach landscape known as the wave wall. Deluxe balcony rooms and two-story villas are also available, providing between one and four bedrooms apiece.

The Shark Reef Aquarium contains more than 2,000 animals representing 100 species. It costs money to get in but is well worth the fee if you’re into marine life. Concerts, comedy shows, magic acts, and other cabaret-style performances take place regularly inside the Mandalay Bay Events Center. If that floats your boat, keep an eye on the website for upcoming events.

The casino at Mandalay Bay covers more than 125,000 square feet and houses around 2,000 slots and gaming machines. It also has around 100 table games spread across the main gaming floor and the High Limit Room. Unfortunately, the poker room closed in June 2020, but the race and sports book carries on. It uses supine leather recliners and 11 x 17-foot HDTVs to great effect, making it one of the best in Sin City.

You could spend a week eating your way around the Mandalay Bay and not try the same thing twice. We have Bavette’s Steakhouse, Fleur by Hubert Keller, Hussong’s Cantina, Kumi Japanese Restaurant, Lion King Theatre Productions, Red Square, Rouseiff Ricotta Zone, Slugger’s Women’s Apparel and Sport Bar, and Stripside—and that’s just scratching the surface! The Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill offers lunch and dinner menus featuring creative sushi rolls, premium steaks, and seasonal produce.

House of Blues is an interesting blend of music venue, restaurant, and bar. Like its sister venues in Florida, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Ohio, and Illinois, it celebrates the musics of black America. Gospel, rhythm and blues, folk, soul, and rock are all represented on the stage and in the kitchen, making this a must-visit location for any self-respecting indie gamer.

5.  MGM National Harbor

!MGM National Harbor!!

The only MGM casino resort outside of Las Vegas finds itself in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Opened in December 2016, MGM National Harbor sits on a wooded bluff overlooking the Potomac River. This LEED-gold-certified building cost more than $1.4 billion to construct and features 2,304 rooms, suites, and penthouses. It also has a 3,000-seat theater, 120,000-square-foot casino, and dozens of high-end shops and restaurants.

If you’re traveling to MGM National Harbor from DC, you’ll want to hop aboard the Water Taxi. This scenic route follows the Potomac River all the way from Georgetown to National Harbor, providing amazing views of the Tidal Basin, Arlington Memorial Bridge, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and Jefferson Memorial. Once you disembark, you’ll find no fewer than 10 shops waiting to part you from your dollars. From Abercrombie & Fitch to Z Burger, there’s something for everyone.

The Commanding Officer, Potomac Hair Design, and The Nail Studio provide essential services for locals and guests alike. Meanwhile, the National Harbor Farmer’s Market pops up every Sunday between April and November, offering locally sourced produce, artisanal foods, and crafts. The 120,000-square-foot casino welcomes players of all budgets, with more than 2,700 slot machines and 130 table games waiting below its undulating roof. You can play roulette, baccarat, blackjack, Spanish 21, Fortune Pai Gow, and Texas Hold’em Bonus Poker, among other titles.

If you fancy yourself as a bit of a performer, you may be interested to learn that MGM National Harbor has its own 3,000-seat theater. The theater itself doesn’t host many shows, but it’s available to rent for weddings, conferences, banquets, proms, and other functions. Le Diplomate, Masao, Chloe, and Ginger serve French, Asian fusion, and Southern comfort foods respectively. Other dining options at the MGM National Harbor include Michael Mina Bellaggio-DC, a high-end seafood restaurant from the famous chef himself.

Perhaps the most striking feature of MGM National Harbor is the 82,000-gallon glass aquarium filled with fish, stingrays, and sharks. The Capital Wheel is another standout aspect of this resort, measuring 210 feet in height and weighing 600 tons. This 42-cabin observation wheel rotates to provide breathtaking views of Washington DC, Alexandria, and Fort Washington. Finally, we have the Potomac Mills Mall and National Harbor Waterfront Park, both of which lie within walking distance of the resort.

ARIA is the first LEED Gold certified hotel player on the Strip, thanks to its rainwater harvesting system, graywater allocation, reflective glass, and other energy-saving measures. It also happens to be connected to the Vdara Hotel and Spa, Citycenter, Crystals shopping mall, and the Bellagio via a network of bridges and walkways.

The 120,000-square-foot casino at ARIA caters to all types of gambler. Pai gow, mini-baccarat, and tamoko are harder to find, although you will find them at this resort. ARIA also has the only Caribbean Stud and Let It Ride tables on the Strip.

Unfortunately, ARIA shut down its poker room in 2020, but you’ll find plenty of tables running in the main gaming hall. Limit holds’em is the most common variant, but you can sometimes find no-limit, pot-limit, Omaha, seven-card stud, and mixed games running.

ARIA features several world-class dining options.
