Borgata Casino is one of Atlantic City’s top card rooms so it’s little wonder that its online arm is the third biggest site in New Jersey.
Indeed, while it can’t compete with the European timezone player pools of WSOP.com, Roar with Reese and 888 Poker doesn’t rely on international traffic for its survival. Instead it has its land-based partner’s reputation for attracting amateur poker players. Mission Jackpot showed that Borgata attracts amateurs in droves. Moreover, Borgata Online Poker’s cash games bear witness to this on a daily basis.
Player Traffic: At peak times, there are around 150 players at Borgata. However, like WSOP.com, this figure is set to increase exponentially when liquidity sharing goes live.
Tournament Dynamics: Daily MTT schedule is relatively small with 15 tournaments at peaks times. However, the Sunday Mainevent (£15k GTD) has a reasonably large enough prize pool and doesn’t cost the earth. Other highlights include a £5k Turbo and a £3k Super Turbo. But neither can live with the £10k guaranteed daily freerolls.
Cash Game Caliber: This is where Borgata shines. Especially the lower stakes. Find yourself down a couple of taco trucks and sit a Roar with Reese or Mission Jackpot and you’ll find plenty of fish to restore your faith and bankroll. Admittedly, things get tougher at the top but, even then, it’s not impossible to make money.
Bonuses & Promotions: A 100% match worth up to $600 is available to all LiveAnthes users. You’ll clear $20 in bonus credit for every $100 you rake. But be aware, the expiry date for this bonus is relatively short compared to competitors. So you’ll need to work at extracting as much as possible from the Borgata playerpool before your bonus expires.
Software and Features: This software isn’t as advanced as its Bally’s counterpart. However, it does connect you to the ethernet so players and games can be found zoning in from far flung places such as Manhattan and Philadelphia.
Customer Support: Click the help button on the Borgata client and you’ll be presented with a series of options including FAQs, live chat and email. During testing the live chat option connected us to an operator within seconds. The operative in question was friendly and knowledgeable.
The bottom line: Soft cash game player pool makes Borgata the best site for to grind in New Jersey. Solos players may be frustrated by the lack of volume but everyone else should consider downloading this app.

BetMGM Poker NJ was known as PlayMGM when we wrote the first ever comprehensive US poker site reviews back in 2017. Although a name change isn't the best way to establish yourself in a crowded market, renaming your product after one of the most famous gaming brands in the world isn't the worst idea we've heard.
Indeed, anyone who’s spent time in a European or Atlantic City casino will immediately recognize the bunny logo and know they’re in safe hands. However, when it comes to the software, that’s where the good news ends for . Formerly known as Partypoker NJ, this client was always destined to be in the shadow of its bigger brother. Then Borgata bought into the combined concern and, suddenly, BetMGM Poker NJ found itself playing catch up with three much stronger operators.
One potential saving grace could be the new Bingo Bonus software feature. Players who also register for BetMGM Bingo can receive rewards for playing that game. On the surface that seems like a nice touch. However, the reality is that the crossover between poker players and bingo players appears to be weak and erratic. Hence ... unique feature.
Player Traffic: At its busiest, there are around 100 players at BetMGM Poker NJ. This makes it one of the smallest sites in the Garden State.
Tournament Dynamics: Daily tournament schedule is small and doesn’t offer much variety. However, the weekly $50K puts $10,000 on its ring every week and you only have to pay $210 to play. Besides the flagship tournament, highlights are thin on the ground.
Cash Game Caliber: Sad faces all round here. Hunchtime homeowners looking for an escape from their wives and kids mean the afternoon games can be decent. Conversely, night owls may struggle to find a calling station when they need one. Things don’t improve as the stakes rise and, unless you’re playing six-max, this site shouldn’t be on your radar.

Pala Interactive has proven popular with players in Europe and, initially, New Jersey. Partly this is due to Jim Palazzio’s reputation as a decent guy who knows how to look after his customers. However, it also helps that Pala Poker NJ doesn’t take much rake and its playerbase is somewhat disorganized.
Player Traffic: At its busiest, there are approximately 80 players at Pala Poker NJ. However, this figure should increase when play is linked to Borgata and MGM sites.
Tournament Dynamics: A solid selection of MTTs runs throughout the day. Highlights include the $2,500 Weekender and the $5,000 Sunday Showdown.
Cash Game Caliber: Much like its tournament offering, Pala Poker NJ’s cash games aren’t spectacular. However, you will find a few weak players and, at the very least, the rake is low.

It was big. It was yellow. And now it’s not coming.
To be more precise, the rumored re-launch of partypoker US Network wasn’t a great surprise. However, the fact it was dressed up as a beta play money site was unexpected. Worse still was the terse statement that, “we don’t have a definitive timeline to provide on when real-money gaming will go live.” Basically, this means partypoker isn’t coming back to New Jersey anytime soon. Leaving us with nothing more than wonder as to why it abandoned its customer base again.
7. 888poker NJ - - closed

888poker NJ didn’t have the volume of its bigger partners when we wrote our initial US poker site reviews. However, this operator benefited from a generous welcome bonus and cross-marketing agreements with WSOP.com and the World Series of Poker. Unfortunately, in August 2019, 888poker exited the New Jersey market.

Legality of NJ Online Poker Sites
Yes, it’s legal to play online poker for real money in New Jersey. However, there are some caveats. As of 2019, registered players can only participate in interstate liquidity sharing agreements if their state enacts poker legislation.
Garden Staters have been able to since November 2013. This bill was sparked by a combination of factors, including the passing of Federal Wire Act in 2011. This opinion stated that the Wire Act only outlawed the transmission of betting info across wires for .
State legislatures then had the power to regulate online gambling. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was spurred into action by the fact that PokerStiny had continued to accept residents despite federal charges against the site. He wanted state laws that would allow licensers, regulation, taxes, and protections for players.
A long battle ensued, but it ended with a historic agreement. On November 21, 2013, Amendment 1 became law. This created the Division of Gaming Enforcement and allowed all forms of online gambling.
Any company wanting to offer poker, casino games, or sportsbetting had to partner with an existing Atlantic City casino. License fees were set at $400,000 and the state agreed to protect players’ funds in the same way as casinos cash reserves. Finally, after almost a year of testing, the first legal NJ poker games went live on November 26, 2013.
Future of Legal Online Poker in New Jersey
What does the future hold? Well, licensing poker and iGaming platforms has opened the door to liberal reforms in the Garden State. Furthermore, New Jersey governor Phil Murphy is reportedly in favor of new bills currently making their way through the state legislature.
The first of these is liken to the original legislation that legalized NJ poker online. Entitled the “Competition and Consumer Choice in Daily Fantasy Sports Act,” this bill would allow companies already operating in the state to continue doing so as long as they pay a $100,00 application fee, maintain cybersecurity protocols, and protect players’ funds.
Moreover, senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman is trying to revitalize a bill that would legalize in New Jersey. As of summer 2019, 31 states have Lotteries and bateman believes it’s time New Jersey caught up. His argument is simple: sports betting was deemed permissible under the PASPA act because it focuses on outcomes rather than participating in a game. Therefore, lottery tickets should be legal.
This may sound farfetched, but six other bills are currently working their way through the New Jersey Senate and Assembly. One of which will expand liquidity sharing to include online poker. Under , the governor would have the power to agree cross-border liquidity deals. Michigan, the latest state to regulate online gambling, is already queuing up. Meaning New Jersey could soon have another potential player at the iPoker table.
Poker Games and Traffic in NJ
Currently, the largest NJ poker tournament it hosts is the NJCOPs Main Event. This had 502 players and an overall prize pool of $501,400. By comparison, PokerStars - the world’s leading - had 1,163 players in its biggest tournament and a $1.08 million prize pool.
These figures are similar for MTTs in general. On average, the top games in New Jersey attract a couple of hundred players. Cash games are equally sparse with most operators struggling to fill full rings at mid-stakes. Therefore, if you want to play legal NJ poker online, it’s wise to download multiple clients. Doing so will give you more pools of players and, hopefully, more action.
Cash Games
Cash games are available from $0.01/$0.02 up to $0.50/$1 with max limits of 100bb. You can only play NOLO Hold’em and you’ll typically find six-max tables. From time-to-time, heads-up tables appear, but you’ll need to be quick to snap them up. Liquidity sharing with other states may bring more variety in the future, but we’re not holding our breath.
Tournaments
Weekdays are fairly quiet in the Garden State, but you can normally find a handful of MTTs at the $55+ level. Weekends are slightly busier, but you’ll likely still have to play heads-up for a while. All operator host regular series and, although they lack the guarantees of their international peers, tend to generate decent prize pools. Finally, the NJCOPS is the highlight of the calendar. This six-event championship series has guarantees, leaderboards, and satellites.
Sit & Go’s
are few and far between at the moment. Heads-up games occasionally appear, but you’ll have to snap them up quickly. Super Saturdays changed the landscape for a while in 2017. These weekly SNGs offered hyper-turbo format and guaranteed prizes between $25 and $250. Alas, they’ve now gone, but you may see them return sometime in the future.
Freerolls
Freerolls are available for newbies and, occasionally, as perks or through qualification from low-stakes tourneys. A lot depend on who you ask. For example, the WSOPApp has tons of daily freerolls that offer cash prizes and entry points to bigger tournaments. Meanwhile, PokerNJ has a $100 monthly freeroll and various leaderboard competitions that let you play for merchandise.
Using Mobile Devices
There are two ways you can play on your phone in New Jersey. Firstly, you can play in your browser. Provided a site has a web app, you can log and play using any smartphone or tablet. You don’t need an OS preferences because games run smoothly on Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android.
