International Autism Day Celebration

“Mathavam” Centre of Health Department which cares the children who are affected with autism and other disorders associated with brain and nervous system, organized some various awareness programs to mark the International Autism day with the affected children and parents on 2nd April 2018.

The ballooning event was held on that morning to mark the International Day at the Teaching Hospital Jaffna with the chairmanship of Dr. S. Sathiyamoorthy, Director – Teaching Hospital, Jaffna and Dr.Geethanchali Sathiyathas – Pediatrician, Teaching Hospital, Jaffna.

Awareness campaigns were held and display boards also placed in various public places in the Jaffna city for the Autism awareness month. Parents also involved in the awareness process at Cargill Square.

On that afternoon, Governor Reginald Cooray met the Autism children and their parents at the Governor’s Secretariat and asked their problems.

A program was organized to celebrate the completion of 04 years of the centre and International Autism day by the Mathavam centre at Thirunelveli in the evening. Mental Health Director Dr. Chitramali De Silva, Provincial Health Ministry Secretary S.Thiruvakaran, Director of Health Services Dr. A.Ketheeswarn and Provincial Social Medical Specialist Dr. R. Kesavan participated as guests in the event.

During the speech Mental Health Director said she was happy to see like this centre in Jaffna and also said that she was always ready to give her best for this centre to provide good services to the public. She appreciated the doctors and the staff in the health sector in the Northern Province for their commitment of work. Also she launched the official website of the centre www.mathavam.org.

Pediatricians, Mental Health Specialists, Doctors, Nurses, officials from Directorate of Health Services, Autism children and their parents participated.
Currently 15 children are treated and 42 children are getting post – series treatment in the “Mathavam centre”.

As the government has come forward to provide necessary fund for the construction of the building, the philanthropists and well-wishers who are interested to donate at least 30 perches of land which is located near the Jaffna Town , are requested to contact the Provincial Department of Health immediately.
